Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oak and Maple: English and Canadian Verses I cannot let this little book go out into the world without a word of apology for offering so slight an object to the public notice. This, then, is what I have to say for myself: Many years ago, when I was yet in my teens, the larger proportion of these verses were written and printed. They were written in the Canadian back woods, and were first published in a collected form in Montreal. But, both before and after the gathering of them into a little volume, various single sets of verses (i will not use the word found their way into Canadian newspapers and magazines, and thence into American ones. Books were in those days rarely produced in Canada, and mine found many and kind readers, and made a little success. Book Later American Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Later American Poems Classic Reprint written by J. E. Wetherell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later American Poems The selections in this volume are quoted from the works of more than fifty authors. The number might easily have been increased to a hundred, but a manual such as this cannot be exhaustive. All the greatest writers of verse of the present epoch are, it is believed, represented here. Of the minor poets some readers may miss a favorite or two, but a cogent reason could be given for every omission. The present volume is intended mainly as a supplementary read ing-book for Canadian High Schools, and that design has influenced the editor not only in his choice of poems but also in determining the limitation in the list of authors. The editor has taken care to include representations of the work of some writers of exquisite verse at present not iiipreface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tecumseh: A Drama and Canadian Poems HE first edition of Tecumseh, published in Toronto in 1886, had a quick sale, but, not being stereotyped, ran out of print, and a te - issue is now called for. The author has often been asked to republish his youthful venture, entitled Dreamland, and other Poems, only a limited number of copies of which saw the light. Whilst the edition was passing through the binder's hands in Ottawa, and the author himself in the then wilderness of Prince Rupert's Land, the greater part of it was burnt in the Desbarats fire in 1869. In the following pages (part II.) the major portion of that unfortunate volume is ih cluded, with such revision as seemed desirable. For the shortcomings of his work, of which the author is but too conscious, his only excuse is that he has done his best. Our romantic Canadian story is a mine of character and incident for the poet and novelist, framed, too, in a matchless environment and the Canadian author who seeks inspiration there is helping to create for a young people that decisive test of its intellectual faculties, an original and distinctive literature - a literature liberal in its range, but, in its highest forms, springing in a large meas ure from the soil, and tasting of the wood. Any work of this kind, therefore, is on the right path, and, though of slender pretensions otherwise, may possess the merits of suggestiveness and sincerity. For his own part, the writer may say, with regard to the book now in hand, that its colouring, at any rate, is due to a lifetime's observation of those primitive inter-racial and formative influences which. Book French Canadian Verse Written Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Canadian Verse Written Classic Reprint written by William Edward Baubie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French-Canadian Verse Written These French-Canadian poems were selected from a number that the author has written from time to time and are those that are more easily read and understood by the average English-speaking person. There is really no such uniformity of dialect among the "habitants" that could be followed with any degree of certainty. Every French-Canadian has his or her own peculiar method of expression in the use of the English language. Some have difficulty in the use of the pronoun, some again speak the English fluently and almost faultlessly, and it is only on rare occasions that a slight misuse of a word or expression exposes their origin to the close observer; but the remaining and more numerous class go battling along through the verbs, pronouns, and adjectives at will - unaffectedly but ruthlessly. These verses are, therefore, not offered as a criterion of the French-Canadian dialect, but merely the English used by some of the types that the writer has observed and known. My love had grown, but that it could not grow; It all-enveloped me, and one sweet kiss F rom her dear lips had made my bosom glow With happiness and many months of pain Had been as nothing, that one kiss to gain. Book A Canadian Twilight and Other Poems of War and of Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Canadian Twilight and Other Poems of War and of Peace Classic Reprint written by Bernard Freeman Trotter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Canadian Twilight, and Other Poems of War and of Peace Bernard Freeman Trotter was killed in action in F rance'on May 7th, 1917. By his early death - he was only twenty-six - Canada lost a brave soldier and one of the most promising of her younger poets. Those who knew him best may be pardoned if they link him in' their thought with Rupert Brooke and Alan Seeger. As the former died for England in the Aegean, and the latter, an American, gave his life for France at the Somme, so Bernard Trotter laid himself on the altar of heroic and unselfish sacrifice for his native land and the sacred cause for which the Empire fights. Without claiming for him equality with either of (these inheritors of unfulfilled renown in respect of promise or achievement, one my justly say that, like them, he was a true poet, dowered with love of beauty and a quick sense of her manifold ap paritions, and possessed of a native gift for the expres sion of poetic thought and feeling in musical rhythms. Cut ope in his youthful prime he has left only a slender sheaf of verse, but enough to prove that he had the authentic singing note of the born poet. The purpose of the present 'writer, however, is not to give a critical estimate of his poetry, but, with the sympathy the sad circumstances manifestly demand, to record the facts of his life and death and to point out the influences that shaped his character and called forth his powers.
