Book Advances in Metal Carbene Chemistry

Download or read book Advances in Metal Carbene Chemistry written by U. Schubert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are only few topics in organometallic chemistry, which have stimulated research activities in as many areas, as transition-metal carbene (alkylidene) complexes. About 25 years after the first planned synthesis of a carbene complex in E.O. Fischer's laboratory in Munich the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Transition-Metal Carbene Complexes was the first meeting which, brought together scientists from different disciplines to discuss inorganic, organic, theoretical structural catalysis-related aspects of metal carbene chemistry. The 70th birthday of Professor E.O. Fischer was a good occasion for this enterprise. The organizers of the meeting (K.D. Dotz, Marburg; F.R. KreiBl, Munchen; U. Schubert, Wurzburg) were encouraged by the fact that most of the leading scientists in this area were able to participate in the workshop. The very high standard of the contributions is reflected in this book, which contains papers from the majority of the participants. The Proceedings show the state of the art in metal carbene chemistry and will hopefully be a landmark in the development of this area of chemistry. Generous financial support for the workshop and for the preparation of this book was provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and some companies. The organizers also acknowledge the efforts of the staff of the Bildungs zentrum der Hans-Seidel-Stiftung in Wild bad Kreuth for creating a pleasant and stimulating atmosphere during the conference.

Book Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

Download or read book Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes written by David McGuinness and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N-heterocyclic carbenes have become established as efficient ancillary ligands for homogeneous catalysis, and an increasing number of catalytic transformations have been carried out using transition-metal carbene complexes. This book describes the synthesis of a broad range of heterocyclic carbene complexes of transition metals, their fundamental reaction chemistry and their use as catalysts in a number of reactions. Mechanistic studies have been performed in order to gain insight into likely catalytic cycles and the decomposition processes of the complexes. The reductive elimination of carbenes with alkyl, aryl, acyl and hydride groups to give the imidazolium cation was discovered, and it was demonstrated that this reaction represents a serious mode to catalyst deactivation for late transition metals. Some strategies to alleviate this effect have been identified, resulting in the development of highly active catalysts for a number of reactions.

Book Late Transition Metal Polymerization Catalysis

Download or read book Late Transition Metal Polymerization Catalysis written by Bernhard Rieger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the 1950s, Ziegler and Natta discovered that simple metallorganic catalysts are capable of transforming olefins into linear polymers with highly ordered structures. This pioneering discovery was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1963. In the 80s and 90s, the development of molecular defined metallocenes led to a renaissance for non-polar polyolefin materials. Designer catalysts allowed a greater precision in defining properties of the material. The past 10 years have seen the discovery of new catalysts based on late transition metals, which allow the combination of polar monomers with non-polar olefins and thus lead to innovative materials. Here, the world's leading authors from industry and academia describe the latest developments in this fascinating field for the first time in such comprehensive detail. In so doing, they introduce readers systematically to the basic principles and show how these new catalysts can effectively be used for polymerization reactions. This makes the book an ideal and indispensable reference for specialists, advanced students, and scientists of various disciplines dealing with research into catalysts and materials science.

Book Late Transition Metal Carboryne Complexes

Download or read book Late Transition Metal Carboryne Complexes written by Zaozao Qiu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zaozao Qiu shows in this thesis that transition metals can mediate or catalyze the cycloaddition or coupling reactions of carboryne with alkynes or alkenes to afford benzocarboranes, alkenylcarboranes or dihydrobenzocarboranes. These results represent powerful strategies to assemble useful complex molecules from very simple precursors in a single operation. Carboranes have many applications in medicine. However, their unique structures make derivatization difficult and the limited efficient synthetic methods to obtain functional carborane materials have restricted applications of carboranes within a narrow scope. This work breaks a new ground in metal-carboryne chemistry and will have a significant impact on synthetic, cluster and materials chemistry.

Book Late Transition Metal Complexes Incorporating Hemilabile Mixed donor N heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

Download or read book Late Transition Metal Complexes Incorporating Hemilabile Mixed donor N heterocyclic Carbene Ligands written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) has dramatically affected the world of catalysis. Their inherent properties that make them excellent auxiliary ligands for catalytic processes have countless laboratories worldwide probing and exploiting every notable feature they possess. However, while there is no shortage of attention in this field of research, there has been considerably less interest in NHCs with an ability chelate to metals via a mixed-donor ligand architecture. Thus, this thesis describes the synthesis and application of a ligand set comprised of bidentate mixed-donor NHC ligands. The ligands prepared all contain a mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene core unit, but incorporate different donor-functionalized tethers. These mixed-donor NHC ligands are synthesized by using a strong base, such as KN(SiMe3)2, to deprotonate the imidazolium salt precursors. This strategy was used to effectively prepare 1-mesityl-3-(2-(mesitylamino)ethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Mes[CNH] and 1-mesityl-3-(2-aminoethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Mes[CNH2]. Mes[CNH] was found to be a convenient proligand for the synthesis of various M-NHC (M = Rh, Ir, Ru, Pd, Ni, Fe, Ag, Li) compounds. These Mes[CNH]-M complexes demonstrated the hemilabile character of the Mes[CNH] ligand forming complexes that incorporated either a coordinated or uncoordinated amino tether. Mes[CNH]M(diene)Cl, Mes[CN]M(diene) and [Mes[CNH]M(diene)]BF4(M = Rh, Ir; diene = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, 2,5-norbornadiene) were synthesized and investigated for their ability to perform hydrogenation and hydrosilylation reactions with various substrates. Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PCy3)Cl2, Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(py)Cl2 (py = pyridine) and Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PMe3)Cl2 were also synthesized and fully characterized. The activity of the former two Ru complexes was studied for their ability to catalyze ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reactions. In addition, the phosphine dissociation rate of Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PCy3).

Download or read book N Heterocyclic Carbenes written by Silvia Diez-Gonzalez and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In less than 20 years N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become well-established ancillary ligands for the preparation of transition metal-based catalysts. This is mainly due to the fact that NHCs tend to bind strongly to metal centres, avoiding the need of excess ligand in catalytic reactions. Also, NHC‒metal complexes are often insensitive to air and moisture, and have proven remarkably resistant to oxidation. This book showcases the wide variety of applications of NHCs in different chemistry fields beyond being simple phosphine mimics. This second edition has been updated throughout, and now includes a new chapter on NHC‒main group element complexes. It covers the synthesis of NHC ligands and their corresponding metal complexes, as well as their bonding and stereoelectronic properties and applications in catalysis. This is complemented by related topics such as organocatalysis and biologically active complexes. Written for organic and inorganic chemists, this book is ideal for postgraduates, researchers and industrialists.

Book A Fight With the Lords of Corruption

Download or read book A Fight With the Lords of Corruption written by Charles Omburo Ogindo and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been described as the fight of David and Goliath. This is a story of Charles Ogindo, a former PhD student in the Department of Chemistry at Binghamton University who woke up to a morning of nightmares. Locked out of research laboratory by his advisor, John J. Eisch, his notebooks confiscated, then accused of ethical violation so that he could be dismissed from college, Mr. Ogindo fought through the University system procedures. Sensing intrigue from the Department and University administration Ogindo filed a case with Supreme Court of New York for wrongful dismissal, later starting an action in federal court. The 'intellectually corrupt gibberish' decisions of those courts which ended in the dismissal of Ogindo's claims did not stop his quest for the end of institutional corruption. An Encounter with the Lords of Corruption is a narration of the fighting spirit of a David against juggernauts of corruption both in the education system and the judiciary. Ogindo argues such unfortunate events as the killing of a professor at Binghamton University would not occur if the US Courts served justice. Comparing his experience to the Penn State University scandal in which boys were sexually abused in the University showers with full knowledge of the coach and the University President, Ogindo tells his story with passion punctuated by the technical on his doctoral dissertation piece, an obvious plus for a reader with some background in chemistry.
