Book Last Year in Marienbad

Download or read book Last Year in Marienbad written by Christoph Grunenberg and published by Wienand Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1961 film Last Year in Marienbad broke with traditional structures of time, location, and causality like no other film before it. The director, Alain Resnais, played with an artistic language in which the style itself became the content. In doing so, he defined an appreciation of art that has extended into the present day: Nouvelle Vague. The catalogue examines the influence of the film on the fine arts, on Pop culture and fashion, garnering international approaches from the beginning of the twentieth century through to the present.

Book The Cinematic Novel and Postmodern Pop Fiction

Download or read book The Cinematic Novel and Postmodern Pop Fiction written by Décio Torres Cruz and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Décio Torres Cruz approaches connections between literature and cinema partly through issues of gender and identity, and partly through issues of reality and representation. In doing so, he looks at the various ways in which people have thought of the so-called cinematic novel, tracing the development of that genre concept not only in the French ciné-roman and film scenarios but also in novels from the United States, England, France, and Latin America. The main tendency he identifies is the blending of the cinematic novel with pop literature, through allusions to Pop Art and other postmodern cultural trends. His prime exhibits are a number of novels by the Argentinian writer Manuel Puig: Betrayed by Rita Hayworth; Heartbreak Tango; The Buenos Aires Affair; Kiss of the Spider Woman; and Pubis angelical. Bringing in suggestive sociocultural and psychoanalytical considerations, Cruz shows how, in Puig’s hands, the cinematic novel resulted in a pop collage of different texts, films, discourses, and narrative devices which fused reality and imagination into dream and desire.

Book L Ann e derni re Marienbad Last Year in Marienbad

Download or read book L Ann e derni re Marienbad Last Year in Marienbad written by Jean-Louis Leutrat and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quintessential work of 1960s European art cinema, L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year in Marienbad, 1961) was a collaboration between director Alain Resnais and 'New Novel' enfant terrible Alain Robbe-Grillet. Three people, known only by their initials, move through the sprawling luxury of a mysterious hotel and its ornamental gardens. Perhaps M is A's husband and X her lover. Perhaps, 'last year', A promised X she would leave with him. Or is there something more terrible in the past? An abstract thriller, a love story, a philosophical puzzle, 'the film's deviations are', for Jean-Louis Leutrat, 'as complex as those of the human heart'.

Book Alain Robbe Grillet

Download or read book Alain Robbe Grillet written by John Fletcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alain Robbe-Grillet had traditionally been seen as an austere experimentalist in fiction, addicted to arid and interminable descriptions of objects like coffee pots, erasers and pieces of string. His own rather bellicose theoretical pronouncements were partly to blame for this unattractive picture, belied by the immense popular success of the film Last Year at Marienbad (1961) (made by Alain Resnais from Robbe-Grillet’s script) and the high critical esteem in which novels like Jealousy and The Voyeur are held. In his original study, first published in 1983, John Fletcher attempts to resolve this paradox by offering a new interpretation of Robbe-Grillet’s work which stresses the subversive qualities of his imagination and the disturbing power of his vision of a world of labyrinths and bizarre sexual stereotypes, haunted by images of love and loss.

Book excerpt: The award-winning screenplay for the classic film the New York Post hailed as “overwhelming . . . a motion picture landmark.” One of the most influential works in the history of cinema, Alain Renais’s Hiroshima Mon Amour gathered international acclaim upon its release in 1959 and was awarded the International Critics’ Prize at the Cannes Film festival and the New York Film Critics’ Award. Ostensibly the story of a love affair between a Japanese architect and a French actress visiting Japan to make a film on peace, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a stunning exploration of the influence of war on both Japanese and French culture and the conflict between love and inhumanity.

Book Practical Identity and Narrative Agency

Download or read book Practical Identity and Narrative Agency written by Kim Atkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume address a range of issues that arise when the focus of philosophical reflection on identity is shifted from metaphysical to practical and evaluative concerns. They also explore the usefulness of the notion of narrative for articulating and responding to these issues. The chapters, written by an outstanding roster of international scholars, address a range of complex philosophical issues concerning the relationship between practical and metaphysical identity, the embodied dimensions of the first-personal perspective, the kind of reflexive agency involved in the self-constitution of one’s practical identity, the relationship between practical identity and normativity, and the temporal dimensions of identity and selfhood. In addressing these issues, contributors engage with debates in the literatures on personal identity, phenomenology, moral psychology, action theory, normative ethical theory, and feminist philosophy.
