Download or read book Lethal State written by Seth Kotch and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, American states have tinkered with the machinery of death, seeking to align capital punishment with evolving social standards and public will. Against this backdrop, North Carolina had long stood out as a prolific executioner with harsh mandatory sentencing statutes. But as the state sought to remake its image as modern and business-progressive in the early twentieth century, the question of execution preoccupied lawmakers, reformers, and state boosters alike. In this book, Seth Kotch recounts the history of the death penalty in North Carolina from its colonial origins to the present. He tracks the attempts to reform and sanitize the administration of death in a state as dedicated to its image as it was to rigid racial hierarchies. Through this lens, Lethal State helps explain not only Americans' deep and growing uncertainty about the death penalty but also their commitment to it. Kotch argues that Jim Crow justice continued to reign in the guise of a modernizing, orderly state and offers essential insight into the relationship between race, violence, and power in North Carolina. The history of capital punishment in North Carolina, as in other states wrestling with similar issues, emerges as one of state-building through lethal punishment.

Download or read book Lethal But Legal written by Nicholas Freudenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions made by the food, tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceutical, gun, and automobile industries have a greater impact on today's health than the decisions of scientists and policymakers. As the collective influence of corporations has grown, governments around the world have stepped back from their responsibility to protect public health by privatizing key services, weakening regulations, and cutting funding for consumer and environmental protection. Today's corporations are increasingly free to make decisions that benefit their bottom line at the expense of public health. Lethal but Legal examines how corporations have impacted -- and plagued -- public health over the last century, first in industrialized countries and now in developing regions. It is both a current history of corporations' antagonism towards health and an analysis of the emerging movements that are challenging these industries' dangerous practices. The reforms outlined here aim to strike a healthier balance between large companies' right to make a profit and governments' responsibility to protect their populations. While other books have addressed parts of this story, Lethal but Legal is the first to connect the dots between unhealthy products, business-dominated politics, and the growing burdens of disease and health care costs. By identifying the common causes of all these problems, then situating them in the context of other health challenges that societies have overcome in the past, this book provides readers with the insights they need to take practical and effective action to restore consumers' right to health.

Book excerpt: A wealthy woman’s last will and testament draws together friends, family, a master felon, and a charming conman in this delightful mystery series debut. Mrs. Arliss was witty. Mrs. Arliss was delightful. But mostly, Mrs. Arliss was rich. And now, Mrs. Arliss is dead. Her friends and relations—gathered to shed a tear, knock back a post-funeral sherry, and determine what loot they’ve inherited—are horrified to discover that things are not as they might have wished. Only two people seem to have cared for Mrs. Arliss more than for her bank account and exquisite collection of eighteenth-century miniatures. One is her girlish secretary, the very model of a flustered ingenue. The other is Virginia Freer, who had in many ways been a second Arliss daughter. They should be free to mourn, but Virginia has a problem. The miniatures are missing and all clues point to her ex-husband Felix—a man who is charming, affectionate, and a double-dipped scoundrel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the summer of 1972: the Vietnam War is still raging, the Cold War is still hot and WWII is still a lurking memory. This legal thriller travels from the Canadian bush to the Australian outback; from courtroom battles to barroom brawls. Old Bill has died. He lived alone in a one room shack along the Blue River in Saskatchewan. His was a simple life; he needed little. But in death, he leaves an estate potentially worth millions of dollars. In his handwritten will, he gives all to the wife and daughter of an Australian airman, who was killed in a prisoner of war camp at Niigata, Japan in 1945. To his surviving brother, he leaves ‘absolutely nothing’. Josef Manne, a young criminal lawyer, is charged with carrying out the old man’s wishes. The brother challenges the will. If it is overturned, he inherits all. Josef’s biggest problem is the will itself. Why would Old Bill leave everything to the wife and daughter of this deceased Australian airman? Makes no sense. Josef needs to find out the why. What happened at Niigata in 1945? First, Josef needs to find the wife and daughter. If both are dead, the will lapses, and the estate goes to the brother. The wife has died leaving the daughter, Rebecca, the sole beneficiary. Josef travels to Goondiwindi, Queensland in search of her. Little does he know that others are searching for Rebecca as well – to kill her. Josef has to keep Rebecca alive.

Book The Last Will and Testament of Alexander the Great

Download or read book The Last Will and Testament of Alexander the Great written by David Grant and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A re-assessment of Alexander the Great's death, exposing a conspiracy by Alexander's generals after his death to undermine his empire. Alexander the Great conquered the largest empire the world had ever seen while still in his twenties but fell fatally ill in Babylon before reaching 33 years old. His wife Roxanne was still pregnant with what would be his only legitimate son, so there was no clear-cut heir. The surviving accounts of his dying days differ on crucial detail, with the most popular version claiming Alexander uttered ‘to the strongest’ when asked to nominate a successor on his deathbed. Decades of ‘civil war’ ensued as Alexander’s hard-won empire was torn asunder by generals in the bloody ‘funeral games’ his alleged final words heralded in. The fighting for supremacy inevitably led to the extermination of his bloodline. But was Alexander really so short-sighted and irresponsible? Finally, after 2,340 years, the mystery is unravelled. In a forensic first, David Grant presents a compelling case for what he terms the ‘greatest succession cover up of all time’. Alexander’s lost Last Will and Testament is given new credibility and Grant deciphers events that led to its erasure from history by the generals who wanted to carve up the empire for themselves.

Book excerpt: "The true star power comes from its compatibly mismatched leads. Joy to those who discover Mr. Thomas’s latest novel this holiday season." —The Wall Street Journal London, 1892—Cyrus Barker is brought into a game of international espionage by the Prime Minister himself in the newest mystery in Will Thomas's beloved series. Private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn receive in the mail an unexplained key stamped with the letter Q. Barker, recognizing it for what it is, uses the key to unlock an anonymous door in the alleyway, which opens to an underground tunnel leading to Downing Street. The Prime Minister has a small task for Cyrus Barker. A Foreign Office agent stole a satchel in Eastern Europe, but was then himself murdered at Charing Cross. The satchel contains a document desperately wanted by the German government, but while the agent was killed, the satchel remains in English hands. With a cold war brewing between England and Germany, it's in England's interest to return the document contained in the satchel to its original owners and keep it out of German hands. The document is an unnamed first century gospel; the original owner is the Vatican. And the German government isn't the only group trying to get possession of it. With secret societies, government assassins, political groups, and shadowy figures of all sorts doing everything they can—attacks, murders, counter-attacks, and even massive street battles—to acquire the satchel and its contents, this small task might be beyond even the prodigious talents of Cyrus Barker.

Book Less Lethal Weapons under International Law

This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitherto 'less-lethal' weapons, in contrast to classical firearms and other highly destructive weapons, have literally slipped under the radar of public international law. This book is the first monograph addressing and analysing all international legal regimes applicable to less-lethal weapons, ranging from arms control treaties, international humanitarian, criminal and human rights law. In doing so the different scenarios in which less-lethal weapons come to use will be taken into account, such as law enforcement, armed conflict and law enforcement scenarios during armed conflict. The relationships between the different legal regimes will be elaborated thoroughly with a view to examining how international law responds to less-lethal weapons. The final chapter provides guidelines as well as recommendations on appropriate use and regulation of less-lethal weapons, where the different scenarios of application, such as in armed conflict and law enforcement, will be given due account.

Download or read book The Jewish Popes written by Leon G. Van Wert and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will we ever see peace in the Middle East? If so, how will it come about? Currently negotiations are in the works for the creation of an independent Palestinian State. However, it will be located in part of the land, which Orthodox Jews believe was set aside by God exclusively for the Jews. They contend that the Israelites under Moses covenanted with God never to let non-Jews live in any part of the Promised Land. They further believe, that a breach of this sacred Covenant will lead to divine curses for the disobedient Jews, including the conquest of Israel by her enemies and the deportation of the surviving Jews to foreign lands. Dr. Leon G. van Wert now has written a new and exciting eschatological work, which clearly shows that the creation of a new, non-Jewish Palestinian State, within the boundaries of the Promised Land, will bring us one pivotal step closer towards the End Times. Using the Old Testament as his guide to interpreting the book of Revelation, Dr. van Wert has unlocked this mysterious book of the Bible. When is the end? The end is near, says the author, when after the creation of an independent State of Palestine, the Cardinals elect two successive Jewish Popes.
