Book excerpt: Plains Indian biographic rock art can be “read” by those knowledgeable in its lexicon. Presented is a lexicon of imagery, conventions, and symbols used by Plains Indians to communicate their warfare and social narratives. The reader is introduced to Plains Indian “warrior” art in all media, biographic art as picture writing is explained, and the lexicon is described, providing a pictographic “dictionary,” and explains conventions and connotations. Finally, it illustrates four key examples of how these narratives are read by the observer. Familiarity with the lexicon will enable interested scholars and laypersons to understand what are otherwise enigmatic rock art drawings found from Calgary, Alberta through ten U.S. states, and into the Mexican state of Coahuila.

Book The Iliad

Download or read book The Iliad written by Richard Janko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the fourth volume in the six-volume Commentary on The Iliad being prepared under the General Editorship of Professor G.S. Kirk, covers Books 13-16, including the Battle for the Ships, the Deception of Zeus and the Death of Patroklos. Three introductory essays discuss the role of Homer's gods in his poetry; the origins and development of the epic diction; and the transmission of the text, from the bard's lips to our own manuscripts. It is now widely recognised that the first masterpiece of Western literature is an oral poem; Professor Janko's detailed commentary aims to show how this recognition can clarify many linguistic and textual problems, entailing a radical reassessment of the work of Homer's Alexandrian editors. The commentary also explores the poet's subtle creativity in adapting traditional materials, whether formulae, typical scenes, mythology or imagery, so as best to move, inspire and entertain his audience, ancient and modern alike. Discussion of the poem's literary qualities and structure is, where possible, kept separate from that of more technical matters.

Book excerpt: The odds of being hit by lightning each year are only about 1 in 750,000 in the U.S. And yet this rare phenomenon has inspired both fear and fascination for thousands of years. In this groundbreaking, brilliantly researched book, journalist John S. Friedman probes lightning’s scientific, spiritual, and cultural roots. Blending vibrant history with riveting first-hand accounts of those who have clashed with lightning and lived to tell about it, Out of the Blue charts an extraordinary journey across the ages that explores our awe and dread in the face of one of nature’s most fearsome spectacles. Herman Melville called it “God’s burning finger.” The ancient Romans feared it as the wrath of God. Today we have a more scientific understanding, so why our eternal fascination with lightning? Out of the Blue attempts to understand this towering force of nature, exploring the changing perceptions of lightning from the earliest civilizations through Ben Franklin’s revolutionary experiments to the hair-raising adventures of storm chasers like David Hoadley, who’s been chronicling extreme weather for half a century. And Friedman describes one of the most treacherous rescues ever attempted in American mountain climbing. Friedman profiles a Virginia ranger who was struck by lightning seven times—and dubbed the human lightning rod—along with scores of others who tell astonishing tales of rescue and survival. And he charts lightning’s profound, life-altering effects on the emotional and spiritual lives of its victims. Combining captivating fact with thrilling personal stories, Out of the Blue tells a remarkable true tale of fate and coincidence, discovery and divine retribution, science and superstition. As entertaining as it is informative, it is a book for outdoor adventurers, sports enthusiasts, science and weather buffs, nature lovers, and anyone who has ever been awed or frightened by the sight of lightning. From the Hardcover edition.

Book The Code

Download or read book The Code written by Ivan Broes and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Code: Horizon of Infinity presents a string of tales that authenticate the concept of the mind’s ability to travel to the edge of the universe. It all began with the breath that blew a domino effect, starting the collapse of a virgin universe like a cancer hollowing out a sinkhole. The residues in this ongoing recycling chemistry build the elements that gather the motor of volition, the soul of the intellect, and the moral code of character, the seed that gives meaning to matter and the nascence of a knowledge bank. Says the author, “I was fascinated by awesome childhood outer body experiences, and like tangible life takes the upper hand, the experiences niggle in mind, as I lived my mind in the vast expanse of space, walking earth on a cushion of air. In adulthood these paranormal experiences multiplied to read meaning in them. Triggered by my baby daughter’s dual nine months apart resuscitation ordeal, and already minutes after birth, her eyes exuded a cognitive universe. Enforced to heal her, before medication brings her brain to the cabbage state, I delved deeper into the mysteries of life, the inherited old motherly spirit given a new body to deal with. I returned to my notes, weighing up these coherent messages of the mind, returning with amazing scientific precision, and supporting evidence from the edge of the virgin universe.”
