Book excerpt: The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.

Book excerpt: Synthesis of nonequilibrium metallic phases has been an area of great interest to the materials processing community since early 1960. Inherent rapid cooling rates in laser processing are being used to engineer non-equilibrium microstructures which cannot be rivaled by other processes. This lecture will discuss the phenomena involved and its application in designing materials with tailored properties. What is non-equilibrium Synthesis? This is a synthesis method to produce binary or higher order materials where kinetics of the pro cess affects the transport of the constituent elements during phase transformation resulting in a composition or crystallographic configuration which is different from what is observed when the elements arranges themselves with the lowest possible Gibbs Free energy, which is the equilibrium condition. Figure 1 illustrates the phenomena. Phase diagram under equilibrium condition is illustrated by the solid line whereas the no-equilibrium phase diagram is represented by the dotted line. One can observe the shrinkage of the phase field under non-equilibrium condition. Any alloy composition between the solidus lines of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagram will be a non equilibrium alloys with extended solid solution.

The intention of the The Symposium Symposium was to gather active scientists in order to assess the current state of the art and future directions. The field of welding is an area which includes a large number of scientific disciplines, such as materials science, solid mechanics, thermal science, and also mechanical engineering design and production engineering. The intention of the Symposium was to cover the direct mechanical effects of welding and their influence on the in-service behaviour of welded structures. The Mechanical Effects of Welding is a very appropriate theme for an IUTAM Symposium. Progress in this field requires close interaction between researchers in several disciplines. This is reflected in the topics covered. The topics of the different sessions were: o Calculations of Temperatures, Strains and Stresses o Residual Stresses and Residual Deformations o Measurements of Residual Strains and Stresses o Effects of Defects and Residual Stresses on Fracture and Fatigue o Effects of Residual Stresses on Creep Deformation o Effects of Residual Deformations and Residual Stresses on Buckling There were 50 participants from 12 countries at the Symposium. The 28 papers presented at the Symposium are collected in this volume. A Scientific Committee, appointed by the Bureau of IUTAM, selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented.

Book excerpt: L’objectif de ce travail est d’étudier des applications de la technique laser aux matériaux polymères utilisés dans le packaging rigide des modules de puissance ferroviaire. La première partie de l’étude consiste à traiter la surface de divers polymères techniques par irradiation laser Nd:YAG pulsé. L’interaction laser/matière induit la création d’un micro-plasma. Différentes techniques de caractérisation (IRTF, angle de contact) mettent en évidence que le traitement sous air permet de nettoyer la surface du polymère par élimination d’un additif. Il s’en suit une réduction de l’affinité du polymère avec le fluide caloporteur utilisé pour refroidir les modules de puissance. Le même traitement sous d’autres atmosphères (argon ou oxygène) conduit au résultat inverse. Sous argon, le processus est thermoablatif tandis que l’oxygène permet une fonctionnalisation chimique de la surface. La seconde partie est consacrée à la mise au point d’une solution de soudage laser par transmission afin d’assembler les différents éléments en PEI du module de puissance. Nous avons alors réalisé un assemblage en PEI opaque et de couleur sombre. L’élément inférieur est rendu absorbant au laser par l’ajout de noir de carbone. L’élément supérieur, transparent au laser mais opaque au visible, est obtenu grâce à deux solutions. La première nécessite l’ajout d’un colorant organique. La seconde, plus adaptée aux hautes températures est basée sur l’utilisation d’un pigment minéral. Enfin, le procédé est modélisé pour obtenir l’évolution spatiale et temporelle de la température dans l’assemblage lors du soudage.
