It is believed that the text treats all of the significant laser measurement techniques that have been published to date in the areas of beam sampling, beam parameters, power, energy, gain, wavelength, bandwidth, coherence and frequency stability. The techniques of modulation and the methods of measurement are treated as are the communication aspects of noise in the laser signal source. This volume contains chapters entitled: Laser parameters and measurement; Beam sampling techniques; Measurement of beam parameters; Measurement of energy and power.

Calibration of *laser energy detectors has an estimated uncertainty of plus or minus 2% for input energies of 0.1J to 100J.Instrumentation is described that is used for the calibration of cw laser power meters.The calibration unit employs an absorption cell calorimeter to calibrate the output of a photovoltaic cell transfer detector.The calibrations are within an accuracy of 4%.A discussion and description is also given of several types of calorimeters that have been used to measure the output of a 100 watt CO2 laser.The most recent design provides for measurement from 1 watt to 5 kilowatts with a measured accuracy of better than 3%.(Author).

Book excerpt: Nearly a decade aga a general review article on the evaluation of optical radia tion hazards was published in Applied Optics (Sliney and Freasier, 1973). This arti cle received many favorable comments but also prompted many inquiries regarding specific optical hazard problems. From this it became evident that a monograph rather than a supplemental and expanded article was needed to fill this literature gap relating to laser and optical radiation hazards. The present work is designed to fill that gap, and is structured to permit either classroom or self-study use. Much of the material in this book was developed in eonnection with short courses on laser safety and radiometry in which we have participated, as weIl as from our previous articles. In particular, the sequenee of chapters is based upon the experiences which we have had in lecturing in courses with different schedules. One of the great difficulties in developing a text of this nature is that a broad, multidisciplinary background must be included in order that the reader can comprehend all of the subjeet matter readily. For this reason, the material presented on anatomy and physiology is orien ted toward the engineer or physical scientist, while the review material on basic optical physics is intended more for the physician or life scientist.

Book excerpt: The optically pumped laser has made an enormous contribution to research in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum known as the far infrared, or submillimetre region. I hope that this book will be useful to both practising and prospective workers in the field, since it contains an up-to-date catalogue of measurements of the main properties of submillimetre lasers as well as an introductory review of the measurement techniques themselves. Wavelength and frequency measurements have been exhaustively compiled (in Part II of this book) along with molecule and pump identification. Part I contains a short review of the relevant measurement techniques in each of these areas and, in addition, a review of power measurements. Working in this field, as in any other, one's satisfaction is determined largely by the colleagues one has and the friends one makes along the way. I am very grateful to Dr G. Dodel, Dr L. C.
