Book excerpt: All of the above data reveal the structure and properties of the alkoxy radicals, which are important intermediate species in the oxidation of hydrocarbons, a reaction that is critical in both combustion and atmospheric chemistry. The spectroscopy is a prerequisite for subsequent dynamic studies. Our work is also of special theoretical interest due to the fact that methoxy radical provides a benchmark case of the Jahn-Teller effect coupled with spin-orbit interaction, giving rise to a potential energy surface which stringently tests modern ab initio calculations.

Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

The intensity of laser-induced fluorescence at 298 nm was used as a measure of methoxy concentration. The presence of various excited molecular products was proven by the analysis of chemiluminescence (CL) spectra. The CL spectra were very complicated and became significantly different when the operating conditions were varied slightly. It was learned that trace amounts of oxygen or air were primarily responsible for these observations.
