Book excerpt: This “brutal and unflinching” novel of fleeting love in Sin City inspired the film starring Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue (Jay McInerney, author of Bright Lights, Big City). John O’Brien’s debut novel, Leaving Las Vegas, is an emotionally wrenching story of a woman who embraces life and a man who rejects it; a powerful tale of hard luck, hard drinking, and a relationship of tenderness and destruction. An avowed alcoholic, Ben drinks away his family, friends, and, finally, his job. With deliberate resolve, he burns the remnants of his life and heads for Las Vegas to end it all in the last great binge of his hopeless life. On the Strip, he picks up Sera, a prostitute, in what might have become another excess in his self-destructive jag. Instead, their chance meeting becomes a respite on the road to oblivion as they form a bond that is as mysterious as it is immutable.

Download or read book Eating Las Vegas 2016 written by Jon Curtas and published by . This book was released on 2016-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restaurant guides typically give readers a singular viewpoint. Eating Las Vegas triples the ante, offering reviews from three respected Las Vegas food critics who hail from completely different backgrounds, lifestyles, and tastes--and who usually disagree on the merits of any particular restaurant. Yet, after countless arguments over lunches and dinners all around town, Las Vegas' best-known dining writers accomplished the impossible and came up with a list of the eateries all three could confidently recommend. Now in its fourth year, Eating Las Vegas has become the premier source for Las Vegas dining information. The 2016 edition features an expanded section of quick-reference lists highlighting the city's best bets for pizza, steakhouses, cocktails, cheap eats, late-night dining, buffets and more. The dreaded and much-debated Veto section returns with more fiery arguments for and against the eateries that came within a vote of being included in the Essential 50. With reviews of restaurants ranging from some of the Strip's most lavish dining rooms to hole-in-the-wall ethnic gems, Eating Las Vegas puts the city's entire extraordinary dining experience on your plate.

Book Las Vegas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lionel Bolnet
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-11-22
  • ISBN : 9781716404405
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Las Vegas written by Lionel Bolnet and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. This famous commercial slogan says it all: an American city, surrounded by a hostile natural border, embodies the oasis of architectural, material, energetic, food, playful debauchery to which one goes to enjoy life without thinking about one's daily life. This is especially true for Americans living on the west coast of the country. But Europeans are also drunk with the images of Las Vegas thanks to the cinema. The IMDb film database contains hundreds of films set in Las Vegas, from "The Amazing Colossal Man" released in 1957 to "Jason Bourne" released in 2016 and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" from 1998. We also have in mind the zany scenes from "The Hangover" (2009) and the deluge of stars from "Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen" (2001, 2004, 2007). In the music industry, the city has established itself as a scene that cannot be ignored. The greatest Western artists have wished to perform there once like French singer Johnny Hallyday or several years in a row like Frank Sinatra or Celine Dion. Television has also taken over Las Vegas for whole series like "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" or a few episodes like "Friends". So, bottle-fed with images of flashing casino fronts, even without going there, everyone thinks they know Las Vegas. This is why this book is deliberately non-illustrated: the image of Las Vegas is too well-known compared to its concrete history. It is time to understand why this city is so original. And to do so, we must focus on its history and architecture.
