Book A Love Story For My Children

Download or read book A Love Story For My Children written by Ruth Lester and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story with a difference, this poignant autobiography is filled with real life drama. Embark on a nostalgic journey through the harsh Depression era and on through the hardships of the War years to the present day. Observe the vast changes that have brought us from the rigid and moralistic society of yesterday to the vastly different liberal mindset of today. The universal thread that runs throughout lends an air of familiarity. It is difficult not to identify with one of the characters-perhaps with the young girl herself in her struggles to persevere, or with the woman she ultimately becomes. Here is a story of contrasts from the depths of despair to the pinnacle of joy-a story that defies the odds. Here is a rendering that tugs at the heartstrings. Poignant, yet redeeming, this uplifting account will serve as an inspiration to all who struggle similarly-as well as to those who love them.

Book Shakespeare in Quebec

Download or read book Shakespeare in Quebec written by Jennifer Drouin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shakespeare in Québec, Jennifer Drouin analyses representations of nation and gender in Shakespearean adaptations written in Québec since the Quiet Revolution. Using postcolonial and gender theory, Drouin traces the evolution of discourses of nation and gender in Québec from the Conquest of New France to the present, and she elaborates a theory of adaptation specific to Shakespeare studies. Drouin’s book explains why Québécois playwrights seem so obsessed with rewriting “le grand Will,” what changes they make to the Shakespearean text, and how the differences between Shakespeare and the adaptations engage the nationalist, feminist, and queer concerns of Québec society. Close readings from ten plays investigate the radical changes to content that allowed Québécois playwrights to advocate for political change and contribute to the hot debates of the Quiet Revolution, the 1970 October Crisis, the 1980 and 1995 referenda, the rise of feminism, and the emergence of AIDS. Drouin reveals not only how Shakespeare has been adapted in Québec but also how Québécois adaptations have evolved in response to changes in the political climate. As a critical analysis in English of rich but largely ignored French plays, Shakespeare in Québec bridges Canada’s “two solitudes.”

Book Up Up and Away

Download or read book Up Up and Away written by Jonah Keri and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the Montreal Expos by the definitive Expos fan, the New York Times bestselling sportswriter and Grantland columnist Jonah Keri. 2014 is the 20th anniversary of the strike that killed baseball in Montreal, and the 10th anniversary of the team's move to Washington, DC. But the memories aren't dead--not by a long shot. The Expos pinwheel cap is still sported by Montrealers, former fans, and by many more in the US and Canada as a fashion item. Expos loyalists are still spotted at Blue Jays games and wherever the Washington Nationals play (often cheering against them). Every year there are rumours that Montreal--as North America's largest market without a baseball team--could host Major League Baseball again. There has never been a major English-language book on the entire franchise history. There also hasn't been a sportswriter as uniquely qualified to tell the whole story, and to make it appeal to baseball fans across Canada AND south of the border. Jonah Keri writes the chief baseball column for Grantland, and routinely makes appearances in Canadian media such as The Jeff Blair Show, Prime Time Sports and Off the Record. The author of the New York Times baseball bestseller The Extra 2% (Ballantine/ESPN Books), Keri is one of the new generation of high-profile sports writers equally facile with sabermetrics and traditional baseball reporting. He has interviewed everyone for this book (EVERYONE: including the ownership that allowed the team to be moved), and fans can expect to hear from just about every player and personality from the Expos' unforgettable 35 years in baseball. Up, Up, and Away is already one of the most anticipated sports books of next year.

They talk and argue, split hairs and clarify, all trying to advance our understanding of this most interesting practice of the human species. • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Larry s Party written by Carol Shields and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stone Diaries marked a new phase in a literary career already ablaze with achievement. As well as the many international awards it received, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Governor General's Award, the book also met with universal critical acclaim and topped bestseller lists around the world. "Carol Shields," raved Maclean's, "has crafted a small miracle of a novel." "The Stone Diaries," said the New York Times Book Review, "reminds us again why literature matters." The San Diego Tribune called The Stone Diaries "a universal study of what makes women tick." Now, in Larry's Party, Carol Shields does the same for men. Larry Weller, born in 1950, is an ordinary guy made extraordinary by his creator's perception, irony and tenderness. Larry's Party gives us, as it were, a CAT scan of his life, in episodes between 1977 and 1997 that flash backward and forward seamlessly. As Larry journeys toward the new millennium, adapting to society's changing expectations of men, Shields' elegant prose transforms the trivial into the momentous. We follow this young floral designer through two marriages and divorces, his interactions with parents, friends and a son. And throughout, we witness his deepening passion for garden mazes -- so like life, with their teasing treachery and promise of reward. Among all the paradoxes and accidents of his existence, Larry moves through the spontaneity of the seventies, the blind enchantment of the eighties and the lean, mean nineties, completing at last his quiet, stubborn search for self. Larry's odyssey mirrors the male condition at the end of our century with targeted wit, unerring poignancy and faultless wisdom.

In a misguided effort to impress them, she lies about her parents and her brothers and most critically her best friend’s uncle. And all this before passing herself off as a boy. When confronted with these falsehoods, Natalie’s only escape is to design an even more complicated set of untruths which compel her to face the young soldier whose identity she used in her letter! Only then does she learn what a real hero is made of. But is she too late to set the record straight? The alarming unspooling of her plans and the shaky reconstruction of a more admirable outcome drive the plot forward. It is a tale of pathos and humor, family drama and friendship that includes a cast of characters from all walks of life. Set in Montreal in the early 1950’s, this story lives and breathes the atmosphere of that postwar city. “In this wonderful book, Noelle Jack weaves a story that is excitement-filled and deeply heartwarming.
