Book Structure of the Turbulence in the Plane Wake Behind a Heated Flat Plate

Download or read book Structure of the Turbulence in the Plane Wake Behind a Heated Flat Plate written by Syed Firasat Ali and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A slightly heated plane turbulence wake was obtained behind a flat plate in incompressible air flow. Hot-wire measurements were carried out to obtain the conventional averaged quantities, the intermittency properties and the conditional turbulent and non-turbulent zone averages of velocity and temperature and their fluctuations. On the basis of the measurements obtained, the question of self-preservation was examined and a limited self-preservation was found with some qualifications. In order to verify the approach of the flat-plate-wake to a universal plane turbulent wake structure, the results were compared with the existing data for the wake of a circular cylinder. The large scale turbulence structure and its role in momentum and heat transfer were studied by measuring two point space time correlations involving temperature, and streamwise and normal velocity fluctuations. Book Turbulent Flows

Download or read book Turbulent Flows written by Jean Piquet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: obtained are still severely limited to low Reynolds numbers (about only one decade better than direct numerical simulations), and the interpretation of such calculations for complex, curved geometries is still unclear. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.

Book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Coherent Structures in Turbulent Wake Flows

Download or read book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Coherent Structures in Turbulent Wake Flows written by F. H. Champagne and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large scale coherent structures have been observed in two-dimensional wakes behind bluff bodies as well as non-vortex shedding bodies. There is a strong indication that these large scale structures are related to the two-dimensional instability modes of the slowly diverging mean wake flow. The Orr-Sommerfeld equation admits two solution modes for the two-dimensional plane wake. These are the sinuous mode with antisymmetric streamwise fluctuations and the varicose mode with symmetric streamwise fluctuations. The wake response to controlled sinuous and varicose types of disturbance waves was investigated. Sinuous disturbances at several amplitudes and frequencies were introduced to the wake of a flat plate by oscillating a small trailing edge flap. The Strouhal numbers of the disturbance waves were specially chosen so that the downstream location of the neutral point was well within the range of measurements. The streamwise variation of the half width of the wake an the centerline deficit was dependent on the amplitude level and showed dramatic deviations, starting near the neutral point, at large forcing levels from the well known square root behavior of the unforced case. The measured coherent Reynolds stresses were observed to change sign in the neighborhood of the neutral point as predicted from linear stability theory. The extent of the validity of linear stability theory was investigated. The wake was also forced with a sinuous disturbance of lower Strouhal number that was amplified over the entire range of measurements. (edc).

Book The Global Geometry of Turbulence

Download or read book The Global Geometry of Turbulence written by Javier Jiménez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Advanced Research Workshop was to bring together Physicists, Applied Mathematicians and Fluid Dynamicists, including very specially experimentalists, to review the available knowledge on the global structural aspects of turbulent flows, with an especial emphasis on open systems, and to try to reach a consensus on their possible relationship to recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of low dimensional dynamical systems and amplitude equations. A lot has been learned during recent years on the non-equilibrium behaviour of low dimen sional dynamical systems, including some fluid flows (Rayleigh-Benard, Taylor-Couette, etc. ). These are mostly closed flows and many of the global structural features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, including chaotic behaviour, period doubling, intermit tency, etc. . It has also been shown that some of these flows are intrinsically low dimensional, which accounts for much of the observed similarities. Open flows seem to be different, and experimental observations point to an intrinsic high dimensionality. However, some of the tran sitional features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, specially in the intermittent behaviour of subcritical flows (pipes, channels, boundary layers with suction, etc. ), and in the large scale geometry of coherent structures of free shear flows (mixing layers, jets and wakes).

Book Transition and Turbulence

Download or read book Transition and Turbulence written by Richard E. Meyer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Research Center Symposia and Advanced Seminar Series: Transition and Turbulence covers the lectures presented at the Symposium on Transition and Turbulence in Fluids, held in Madison, Wisconsin on October 13-15, 1980 under the auspices of the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The book focuses on the relation between transition and turbulence in fluids and the importance of this relation for the understanding of many real fluid motions. The selection first elaborates on transition in flow between rotating concentric cylinders, observations in the Taylor experiment, and transition to turbulence in thermal convection with and without rotation. Discussions focus on low aspect ratio convection layers, random convection in a rotating layer, unsteady flows at high Reynolds numbers, transition to oscillatory motion, and experimental observations. The text then tackles instability and turbulence in jets, instability and transition in pipes and channels, and transition to turbulence in boundary layers. The book ponders on coherent structures in turbulence; interactions between large-scale coherent structures and fine-grained turbulence in free shear flows; and vortex interactions and coherent structures in turbulence. Topics include atomic and molecular representations, vortices in uniform strain, vortex pairs, numerical computations applied to a simple problem, agglomeration of large-scale structures and subharmonic formation, retrieving phase information, and dynamical equations. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in pursuing further studies on transition and turbulence.

Book Constructive Modeling of Structural Turbulence and Hydrodynamic Instabilities

Download or read book Constructive Modeling of Structural Turbulence and Hydrodynamic Instabilities written by Oleg Mikha?lovich Belot?serkovski? and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an original approach in the research of structural analysis of free developed shear compressible turbulence at high Reynolds number on the base of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and instability evolution for ideal medium (integral conservation laws) with approximate mechanism of dissipation (FLUX dissipative monotone ?upwind? difference schemes) and does not use any explicit sub-grid approximation and semi-empirical models of turbulence. Convective mixing is considered as a principal part of conservation law.Appropriate hydrodynamic instabilities (free developed shear turbulence) are investigated from unique point of view. It is based on the concept of large ordered structures with stochastic core of small scale developed turbulence (?turbulent spot?). Decay of ?turbulent spot? are simulated by Monte Carlo method. Proposed approach is based on two hypotheses: statistical independence of the characteristic of large ordered structures (LOS) and small-scale turbulence (ST) ?and? weak influence of molecular viscosity (or more generally, dissipative mechanism) on properties of large ordered structures. Two versions of instabilities, due to Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov are studied detail by the three-dimensional calculations, extended to the large temporal intervals, up to turbulent stage and investigation turbulent mixing zone (TMZ).The book covers both the fundamental and practical aspects of turbulence and instability and summarizes the result of numerical experiments conducted over 30 years period with direct participation of the author. In the book are cited the opinions of the leading scientists in this area of research: Acad. A S Monin (Russia), Prof. Y Nakamura (Japan, Nagoya University) and Prof. F Harlow (USA, Los-Alamos).
