Asymptotic results for estimation and testing are derived using the “moving alternative” formulation due to R. A. Fisher and L. Le Cam. Later chapters include discussions of linear rank statistics and of chi-squared tests for contingency table analysis, including situations where parameters are estimated from the complete ungrouped data. This book is based on lecture notes prepared by the first author, subsequently edited, expanded and updated by the second author. The procedures discussed are useful in situations where the available sample size is small, and procedures grounded in large-sample theory may not be applied without consequence. We present an exact test of monotone trend useful for dose-response studies in which the dose variable is qualitative in nature. Further approaches are developed to incorporate a quantitative predictor. Finally, we develop an exact test about the kappa coefficient in studies of inter-rater reliability, and exact tests for homogeneity of agreement across multiple studies.

At the same time, this new paradigm retains the elements of objective measurement and control of the frequency of misleading results, features which made the old paradigms so important to science.
