Book Language Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Language Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis written by Majid Soltani and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating ability is one of the necessary social needs in human, and language is a critical part of daily connections and communications. Language is impaired by different central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). MS leads to a language disorder by creating some plaques in subcortical constructions such as naming problems, semantic errors, and circumlocutory naming errors, semantic paraphasia, nonfluent speech, and grammatical and syntactic problems such as reduced mean maximum length of sentences and the number of spoken words and impairment in high-level language skills.

Book Acquired Speech and Language Disorders

Download or read book Acquired Speech and Language Disorders written by Bruce E. Murdoch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is vital to have knowledge of the neuroanatomical structures and functional neurological mechanisms, which are disrupted in neurogenic speech/language, disordered persons in order to understand the speech/language deficits themselves. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the neurological basis of both the clinically recognised forms of aphasia and the various motor speech disorders, in both children and adults. It also covers more recently recognised language disorders, such as Parkinsons and related diseases, right hemisphere damage, closed-head injury, dementia, etc. This is a perfect text for practitioners who need to understand the integration of neuroanatomy and functional neurology with the practice of speech-language pathology.

Book Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders

Download or read book Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders written by Alexander Rae-Grant, MD and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special populations, societal and family issues, and related disorders that are often mistaken for MS are also covered. Dedicated chapters on neuromyelitis optica and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis incorporate newer diagnostic criteria. Because comorbidities often make the management of MS-related disability more complex, the book addresses these comorbidities as part of a comprehensive management plan. To enhance the clinical utility, critical-to-know information and management pearls are boxed for quick reference and most chapters include lists of "Key Points" for clinicians, and for patients and families. Illustrations, tables, graphs, assessment scales, and up-to-date MRI imaging inform the text throughout. The treatment chapters include specific recommendations where available and highlight areas of controversy.

Book Syntactic Complexity in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Syntactic Complexity in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis written by Katherine Alma King and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies using standardized tests have provided evidence for the presence of language disorders in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and have suggested that persons with MS may have language that is less complex. One aspect not thoroughly studied is that of syntactic complexity in naturalistic, conversational settings. The present study collected language samples from 10 adults with MS and 10 age-matched controls and compared scores on five quantitative measures derived from those samples. No significant differences were found between groups on any measure. This finding suggests that in mild cases of MS or during periods of remission, individuals may retain their ability to use complex language structures in naturalistic discourse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "MS is always in the back of your mind. If there is something you want to do, you always wonder if the MS will allow you do to it." —Darlene, living with MS for 22 years Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) is challenging and multidimensional. MS pervades all aspects of life: one’s body becomes unpredictable and unreliable, one’s identity and sense of self are tested, and relationships with others often change. MS symptoms emerge and remit; limitations evolve and progress. MS rehabilitation is an active, person-centered, and goal-oriented process embedded within a respectful and collaborative partnership between the person with MS and the members of his or her rehabilitation treatment team. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a guiding framework, Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation: From Impairment to Participation provides a comprehensive and evidence-based resource to inform and guide clinical reasoning and decision making during each phase of the MS rehabilitation process, from initial referral to post-discharge follow-up. With an emphasis on the application of evidence throughout the entire MS rehabilitation process, the specific objectives of the book are to increase the understanding of: The nature and impact of specific impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions experienced by people with MS How to select and use valid, reliable, and relevant assessment tools to inform the development of rehabilitation goals and intervention plans, and to evaluate outcomes This book provides information about the nature and impact of MS on the daily lives of people living with the disease, describes evidence-based assessment processes and instruments, and summarizes current knowledge that can inform goal setting and intervention planning. Thoughtful application of the knowledge contained in this book will inform and guide rehabilitation providers to work collaboratively with people with MS and enable them to achieve their goals for participation in everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is among the most frequent neurological diseases, which affect seriously the quality of life of a constantly increasing number of patients, inducing physical and mental invalidism with indefinite perspectives. The ongoing investigation of the pathogenetic background and the inconclusive analysis of many pathophysiological mechanisms and serious neuropathological alterations of the disease are dominant crucial topics in the field of neurosciences, aimed at tracing a definite way to a therapeutic approach. The authors of this volume attempt to throw light on the labyrinth of multiple sclerosis, approaching the disease from the viewpoint of epidemiology, autoimmune reactions, symptomatology, mental and physical decline, diagnostic procedures, prognosis, and treatment. The authors submit herein, along with scientific data, their hope of contributing effectively to ameliorating the quality of life of those suffering from multiple sclerosis who wait patiently for the day of recovery.

Book Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Multiple Sclerosis written by Kathy Reed and published by . This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis: The Many Faces of the Disease, is a non-fiction autoimmune disease story revolving around Suzanne McCuiston Bradley, a woman plagued with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for most of her life. In the beginning, the focus is on symptoms and early indicators of the disease. Although the National MS Society estimates that about 400,000 people have the disease, no one knows for certain. This alarming number can have serious impacts on people with MS, as well as loved ones and caregivers.A case study of Suzanne reveals her life and how she suffered from this debilitating disease. It shows how she was able to overcome in certain circumstances and how she was merely able to survive in other situations. Her life is discussed before and during MS. This story was originally about helping her find a cure, or at least relief. Later, it became about helping other people deal with the emotional and physical symptoms of MS. While one chapter is specifically about Suzanne, her battle is tied into the other chapters as well. She is used as an example whenever possible.Writing this book helped gain insight into the true life of Suzanne. The goal was to learn primarily what science could not yet answer: why this disease occurs and how to cure it. Despite the fact that these answers do not really exist, hopefully one day they will exist, this story examines these questions and other areas relative to Multiple Sclerosis.

Book Language Differences in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis when Compared to Controls

Download or read book Language Differences in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis when Compared to Controls written by Laura Jean Swan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease characterized by an unpredictable course with exacerbation and remission of symptoms and can result in language changes. The present study describes the form, content, and use language abilities of a group of 10 subjects with MS based on their performance on the Test of Verbal Comprehension subtest from the Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ-III) and an analysis of a language sample using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT). Comparative performance of the group with MS with matched control subjects revealed the subjects with MS to present with significant differences in the form and use language categories. Positive moderate to high correlations were found for the control group for education level and age for form, content, and use. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the role of the speech-language pathologist in the comprehensive assessment of language in patients with MS.

Book The Handbook of Adult Language Disorders

Download or read book The Handbook of Adult Language Disorders written by Argye E. Hillis and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Adult Language Disorders is the essential guide to the scientific and clinical tenets of aphasia study and treatment. It focuses on how language breaks down after focal brain damage, what patterns of impairment reveal about normal language, and how recovery can be optimally facilitated. It is unique in that it reviews studies from the major disciplines in which aphasia research is conducted—cognitive neuropsychology, linguistics, neurology, neuroimaging, and speech-language pathology—as they apply to each topic of language. For each language domain, there are chapters devoted to theory and models of the language task, the neural basis of the language task (focusing on recent neuroimaging studies) and clinical diagnosis and treatment of impairments in that domain. In addition, there is broad coverage of approaches to investigation and treatment from leading experts, with several authors specializing in two or more disciplines. This second edition focuses on characterizing the cognitive and neural processes that account for each variant of aphasia as a first step toward developing effective rehabilitation, given that aphasia is one of the most common and disabling consequences of stroke. The best and most authoritative handbook in the field, The Handbook of Adult Language Disorders is the definitive reference for clinicians and researchers working in the scientific investigation of aphasia.

Book Neurobehavioral Aspects of Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Neurobehavioral Aspects of Multiple Sclerosis written by Stephen M. Rao and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disease affecting young and middle-aged adults, and while much is known about its classic motor and sensory symptoms, it has only been during the past decade, with the advent of specialized neuropsychological test procedures and brain imaging methods, that the cognitive and behavioral changes associated with the disorder have come to be better understood. This book charts that recent progress. It provides a balanced, interdisciplinary view, covering the prevalence, range, type, and course of cognitive and affective disturbances in multiple sclerosis; the interrelationship of the neurobehavioral disturbance with brain abnormalities as visualized by neuroimaging; and the impact of cognitive and behavioral disabilities on patient rehabilitation. The book will be of value to all physicians and psychologists who deal with MS patients. It will update their knowledge of the disease and its ramifications, and will help in communicating this information to patients and their families.
