Book Language and Society in South Asia

Download or read book Language and Society in South Asia written by Michael C. Shapiro and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades there has been a significant amount of research and publication concerning the sociolinguistics of South Asian languages. Language and Society in South Asia is the first major attempt to assess the impact of this new literature. It exposits the methodological and theoretical assumptions of sociolinguistic descriptions of south Asian languages, and contrasts them with the assumptions of earlier characterizations of these languages. An important feature of this book is its detailed examination of numerous schools of linguistic analysis within which most past descriptive work on South Asian languages has been carried out. This is done in language accessible both to the professional linguist and to non-linguists interested in social aspects of language use in South Asia. Among the topics treated in this book are traditional taxonomies of South Asian languages, South Asia as a linguistic area, social dialectology, bi- and multilingualism in South Asia, pidginization, creolization, and South Asian English, ethnographic semantics, and the ethnography of speaking. The work also contains an extensive bibliography of the scholarly literature pertinent to the study of South Asian languages in their social contexts.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Sociolinguistics Around the World written by Martin J. Ball and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on examples from a wide range of languages and social settings, The Routledge Handbook of Sociolinguistics Around the World was originally the first single-volume collection surveying the current research trends in international sociolinguistics. This new edition has been comprehensively updated and significantly expanded, and now includes more than 50 chapters written by leading authorities and a brand-new substantial introduction by John Edwards. Coverage has been expanded regionally and there is a critical focus on Indigenous languages. This handbook remains a key tool to help widen the perspective on sociolinguistics to readers interested in the field. Divided into sections covering the Americas, Asia, Australasia, Africa, and Europe, the book provides readers with a solid, up-to-date appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of the field of sociolinguistics in each area. It clearly explains the patterns and systematicity that underlie language variation in use, along with the ways in which alternations between different language varieties mark personal style, social power, and national identity. The Routledge Handbook of Sociolinguistics Around the World is the ideal resource for all students in undergraduate sociolinguistics courses and for researchers involved in the study of language, society, and power.

Book Language Planning in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Language Planning in the Asia Pacific written by Robert Kaplan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the language situation in Hong Kong, Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka explaining the linguistic diversity, the historical and political contexts and the current language situation, including language-in-education planning, the role of the media, the role of religion and the roles of non-indigenous languages. Two of the authors are indigenous to the situations described while the other has undertaken extensive field work and consulting there. The three monographs contained in this volume draw together the literature on each of the polities to present an overview of the research available about each of them, while providing new research-based information. The purpose of the volume is to provide an up-to-date overview of the language situation in each polity based on a series of key questions in the hope that this might facilitate the development of a richer theory to guide language policy and planning in other polities where similar issues may arise. This book was published as special issues of Current Issues in Language Planning.

Book Translation as Social Justice

Download or read book Translation as Social Justice written by Wine Tesseur and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the translation policies and practices of international non-governmental organisations (INGOs), engaging in critical questions around the ways in which translation can redress power dynamics between INGOs and the people they work with, and the role of activist researchers in contributing to these debates. The volume examines the duality of translation and interpreting in INGOs, traditionally undervalued and under-resourced while simultaneously acknowledged as a powerful tool in ensuring these organisations work according to their own values of equal access to information, dialogue, and political representation. Drawing on over ten years of ethnographic fieldwork and interview data with a wide variety of INGOs, Tesseur offers unique insights into if and how INGOs plan for translation and interpreting needs while also critically reflecting on her own experience and the ways in which activist researchers like her can ensure social justice efforts are fully reflected in their own working practices. Encouraging a new interdisciplinary research agenda, the volume seeks to raise the profile of language and translation in humanitarian and development contexts and cross-disciplinary dialogue in scholarship on these issues. The book will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies, sociolinguistics, development studies, and international relations.

Book The Languages and Linguistics of South Asia

Download or read book The Languages and Linguistics of South Asia written by Hans Henrich Hock and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With nearly a quarter of the world’s population, members of at least five major language families plus several putative language isolates, South Asia is a fascinating arena for linguistic investigations, whether comparative-historical linguistics, studies of language contact and multilingualism, or general linguistic theory. This volume provides a state-of-the-art survey of linguistic research on the languages of South Asia, with contributions by well-known experts. Focus is both on what has been accomplished so far and on what remains unresolved or controversial and hence offers challenges for future research. In addition to covering the languages, their histories, and their genetic classification, as well as phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, and sociolinguistics, the volume provides special coverage of contact and convergence, indigenous South Asian grammatical traditions, applications of modern technology to South Asian languages, and South Asian writing systems. An appendix offers a classified listing of major sources and resources, both digital/online and printed.

Book English Language Education in South Asia

Download or read book English Language Education in South Asia written by Lesley Farrell and published by Cambridge India. This book was released on 2011 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Asia, English is the major link language for people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. With globalisation and the subsequent rise in the demand of English, almost all South Asian countries are in the process of introducing English at the early school level. This widens the scope of investigating into the national policies regarding English and probing the status of English language in relation to pedagogy in the countries of the South Asian region. "English Language Education in South Asia" provides a strong foundation for scholarly work on ELE in South Asia. The volume contains compilation of scholarly and investigative essays, especially written for this volume, by some of the most prominent and emerging scholars of English language education in South Asia. The chapters provide up-to-date information on the politics, policy, theory and practice of ELE in seven countries of South Asia - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The volume, divided into three sections - Policy, Pedagogy and Politics of Pedagogy - investigates how the socio-economic, local and global language politics shape the ELE in South Asia. It also addresses the theoretical as well as practical issues of classroom procedures, teacher preparation programmes, resource management, examinations, educational constraints and limitations.
