Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Landtakers: The Story of an Epoch' is a drama-genre novel written by Brian Penton. The story opens by introducing us to Derek Cabell, who was glaring around at the ramshackle buildings of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. His gesture of impatience, failing even to startle the dog, which slept on with its nose to its tail, or the drowsy horse he had tethered to his boot, only confirmed his deep sense of personal futility.

Book Australian Books and Authors in the American Marketplace 1840s 1940s

Download or read book Australian Books and Authors in the American Marketplace 1840s 1940s written by David Carter and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Books and Authors in the American Marketplace 1840s–1940s explores how Australian writers and their works were present in the United States before the mid twentieth century to a much greater degree than previously acknowledged. Drawing on fresh archival research and combining the approaches of literary criticism, print culture studies and book history, David Carter and Roger Osborne demonstrate that Australian writing was transnational long before the contemporary period. In mapping Australian literature’s connections to British and US markets, their research challenges established understandings of national, imperial and world literatures. Carter and Osborne examine how Australian authors, editors and publishers engaged productively with their American counterparts, and how American readers and reviewers responded to Australian works. They consider the role played by British publishers and agents in taking Australian writing to America, and how the international circulation of new literary genres created new opportunities for novelists to move between markets. Some of these writers, such as Christina Stead and Patrick White, remain household names; others who once enjoyed international fame, such as Dale Collins and Alice Grant Rosman, have been largely forgotten. The story of their books in America reveals how culture, commerce and copyright law interacted to create both opportunities and obstacles for Australian writers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landtakers: The Story of an Epoch His eyes screwed up against the harsh light, his boyish features matted in lines of discontent, Cabell sat on the side of the road and bitterly compared this crude scene with an image of his native Dorset village. The violence with which he beat at the flies buzz ing in a black cloud round his face and neck revealed the intensity of his feelings. A detachment of soldiers and yellow-clad convicts approached from the other end of the street as though upon air. Only the rattle of a chain here and there was to be heard', for the dust was inches thick and soft as powder. It rose in clouds from their feet and cast a smoky shadow on the ground. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1882 the circus impresario P. T. Barnum called for examples of "all the uncivilized races in existence.” In response, the showman R. A. Cunningham shipped two groups of Australian Aborigines to the United States. They were displayed as "cannibals” in circuses, dime museums, fairgrounds, and other showplaces in America and Europe and examined and photographed by anthropologists. Roslyn Poignant tells the fascinating and often searing story of the transformation of the Aboriginal travelers into accomplished performers, professional savages who survived at least for a short time by virtue of the strengths they drew from their own culture and their individual adaptability. Most died somewhere on tour. A century later, the mummified body of Tambo, the first to die, was discovered in the basement of a recently closed funeral home in Cleveland, Ohio. Poignant recounts how Tambo’s posthumous repatriation stimulated a cultural renewal within the community from which he came, exposing the roots of present social and economic injustices experienced by indigenous Australians.
