Book Landowner Survey of Herbicide Use and Application Practices for Mesquite Control in Texas

Download or read book Landowner Survey of Herbicide Use and Application Practices for Mesquite Control in Texas written by Rebecca B. Koenig and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) invasion is a concern for many Texas landowners. This study explored mesquite control practice and use by Texas landowners and examined factors that influence the decision to treat lands. Data were collected using a survey delivered in one of three ways: by group, by individual, or via the Internet. Generally, landowners treat mesquite to improve lands, regardless of enterprise. Data suggests that when total treatment cost/acre exceeds $45/acre, landowners are reluctant to treat mesquite. Use of individual plant treatment was consistent across owned acreage classes; whereas, broadcast application transitioned from ground to aerial application at greater than 1,000 acres. When selecting an herbicide, landowners prefer effective products, at a low cost, with a high number of species targeted and consistent mortality. Study results offer information for those developing or promoting herbicides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global problem or treasure? This question has accompanied the widespread and controversial mesquite tree wherever it grows and is studied around the world. In this comprehensive reference to the genus Prosopis, rangeland scientist Rodney Bovey has gathered and synthesized years of research in a book that reflects our current state of knowledge about the biology, morphology, and management of mesquite. Environmentally adaptive, the mesquite is considered by many to be an invasive or a pest species, and Bovey addresses the concerns about mesquite encroachment worldwide. But he also explains its ecological importance in the prevention of erosion and desertification and in providing food and habitat for wildlife. In addition, Bovey traces the uses of mesquite by humans and discusses the economics of growing and harvesting mesquite. A handy guide to the names, locations, distributions, habitat, structure, and uses of several species of mesquite is included in this benchmark publication for ecologists, range managers, biologists, landowners, and students of agriculture and ecosystem science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of brush in rangeland environments continually tops the list of priority issues among landowners, and not just in Texas. Whether they manage their land for livestock, hunting, or wildlife watching, what to do about unwanted woody plants remains a serious and pervasive question for landowners everywhere. In the pages of this book, leading range management professionals introduce and explain not only the mechanisms of managing brush but also the changes in management philosophy and technology that have taken place over time. From the futile attempts at eradication to the successes of integrated brush management, expert practitioners examine mechanical, biological, chemical, and fire-related methods from three perspectives—the past, the present or “state-of-the-art,” and the future. In a final discussion, three specialists address the timely and important subject of brush management as it relates to water yield, economics, and wildlife. Brush Management: Past, Present, Future gives readers a straightforward and comprehensive view of a topic that remains a consistent concern for livestock, wildlife, and land management—one that will serve as a useful and interesting summary of the subject for teachers, students, landowners, and management professionals.
