Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words contained within the covers of this book are intended to speak to some of lifes ups and downs. Life encompasses a multitude of components that require daily maintenance and/or managementand your judgment in those areas will drive the direction of your existence. Life will, sooner or later, introduce you to the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in-betweenhumor, joy, sadness and the always-present mystery. The author believes the words in this book to be universalalthough not universally spoken nor acknowledged. Richards odyssey has been continuous from the denial of his rural Arkansas roots to his acceptance in Phase Three. While the Greyhound bus physically transported him away from his disdainand provided the escape from his dysfunctional family, the relocation only skewed his perspective. California was a world apart from Arkansas, and without an education and/or a craftlife would severely test the authors fortitude and determination. It would resemble a scavenger hunt as he chased his always-moving, always-fading demons for personal understanding. This book began simply enough as letters to his son (the second of two from the authors second marriage) who was/is also seeking self-understanding. The son was serving prison time for drug usage and drug-related crimes stemming from twenty years of abuse. Added to that, his son, Landon, is afflicted with epilepsy and the combination (epilepsy and heroin) can produce deadly consequences. His sons first letter not only requested that his father correspond with him, but that he fill in the gaps of his lifehis words were, Dad, I know nothing of you before our family. The father was taken abackhe had rarely, if ever, thought about his past lifemuch less verbalized it to others. Initially, as he reflected on the request, he wondered if he even remembered anything about his pastor had he buried it so deeply (through denial) that he would never be able to resurrect the information that his son was requesting. The book chronicles the authors early years in Arkansas and his own drug abuse during his twenties as he struggled in California. The book reveals the authors insecurities regarding his lack of a formal education. How he created a faade to conceal his perceived deficiencies as he managed a challenging career (the majority of those years at the supervisory level) within the oil industry. One cannot read just one of the letters, encapsulated between the Foreword and the last page, and fully comprehend the purpose and/or intent of this collaboration between the writers present life and his long-buried past. Singularly, none of the enclosed correspondence is capable of standing alonebut linked together, they provide a measure of insightfulness and understanding (you decide about what). There are common threads woven throughout the writingand there are also subliminal messages, advice, thoughts, insight, understanding, encouragements and reconciliation embedded within the dynamics of this endeavor. From the author: Landon and I have come a long way with our burdens; and while neither of us have arrived yetI believe we are both on the correct path and approaching the other side. But only time will tell

Download or read book L E L written by Lucasta Miller and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2019 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 15 October 1838, the body of a thirty-six-year-old woman was found in Cape Coast Castle, West Africa, a bottle of Prussic acid in her hand. She was one of the most famous English poets of her day: Letitia Elizabeth Landon, known by her initials 'L.E.L.' What was she doing in Africa? Was her death an accident, as the inquest claimed? Or had she committed suicide, or even been murdered? To her contemporaries, she was an icon, hailed as the 'female Byron', admired by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Heinrich Heine, the young Bronte sisters and Edgar Allan Poe. However, she was also a woman with secrets, the mother of three illegitimate children whose existence was subsequently wiped from the record. After her death, she became the subject of a cover-up which is only now unravelling. Too scandalous for her reputation to survive, Letitia Landon was a brilliant woman who made a Faustian pact in a ruthless world. She embodied the post-Byronic era, the 'strange pause' between the Romantics and the Victorians. This new investigation into the mystery of her life, work and death excavates a whole lost literary culture.

Book excerpt: 'Tell me, Muse, of the man of many turns, who was driven far and wide after he had sacked the sacred city of Troy' Twenty years after setting out to fight in the Trojan War, Odysseus is yet to return home to Ithaca. His household is in disarray: a horde of over 100 disorderly and arrogant suitors are vying to claim Odysseus' wife Penelope, and his young son Telemachus is powerless to stop them. Meanwhile, Odysseus is driven beyond the limits of the known world, encountering countless divine and earthly challenges. But Odysseus is 'of many wiles' and his cunning and bravery eventually lead him home, to reclaim both his family and his kingdom. The Odyssey rivals the Iliad as the greatest poem of Western culture and is perhaps the most influential text of classical literature. This elegant and compelling new translation is accompanied by a full introduction and notes that guide the reader in understanding the poem and the many different contexts in which it was performed and read.

Download or read book Fulk Nerra the Neo Roman Consul 987 1040 written by Bernard S. Bachrach and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive biography of Fulk Nerra, an important medieval ruler, who came to power in his teens and rose to be master in the west of the French Kingdom. Descendant of warriors and administrators who served the French kings, Fulk in turn built the state that provided a foundation for the vast Angevin empire later constructed by his descendants. Bernard Bachrach finds the terms "constructed" and "built" more than metaphorical in relation to Fulk's career. He shows how Fulk and the Angevin counts who followed him based their long-term state building policy on Roman strategies and fortifications described by Vegetius. This creative adaptation of Roman ideas and tactics, according to Bachrach, was the key to Fulk's successful consolidation of political power. Students of medieval and military history will find here a colorful, impressively researched biography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 27, 1937, NBC presented TV's first pilot film, Sherlock Holmes (then called an "experiment"). Thousands of pilot films (both unaired and televised) have been produced since. This updated and restyled book contains 2,470 alphabetically arranged pilot films broadcast from 1937 to 2019. Entries contain the concept, cast and character information, credits (producer, writer, director), dates, genre and network or cable affiliation. In addition to a complete performer's index, two appendices have been included: one detailing the pilot films that led to a series and a second that lists the programs that were spun off from one series into another. Never telecast pilot films can be found in the companion volume, The Encyclopedia of Unaired Television Pilots, 1945-2018. Both volumes are the most complete and detailed sources for such information, a great deal of which is based on viewing the actual programs.
