Book The Early Church in the Light of the Monuments

Download or read book The Early Church in the Light of the Monuments written by Arthur Stapylton Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Church in the Light of the Monuments: A Study in Christian Archology This series of Handbooks is designed to meet a need, which, the Editors believe, has been widely felt, and which results in great measure from the predominant importance attached to Dogmatic and Moral Theology in the studies preliminary to the Priesthood. That the first place must of necessity be given to these subjects will not be disputed. But there remains a large outlying field of professional knowledge which is always in danger of being crowded out in the years before ordination, and the practical utility of which may not be fully realised until some experience of the ministry has been gained. It will be the aim of the present series to offer the sort of help which is dictated by such experience, and its developments will be largely guided by the suggestions, past and future, of the Clergy themselves. To provide Textbooks for Dogmatic Treatises is not contemplated - at any rate not at the outset. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Early Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Christianity Classic Reprint written by Samuel Benjamin Slack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christianity Scholars have understood the relation of the Greek of the New Testament to other forms of the Greek language. Two sources of new light may be mentioned here. One is the study of Comparative Religion; practices which by them selves are obscure, frequently become clear when compared with corresponding practices elsewhere. A simple example is the modern custom of wear ing black, when a friend has been lost by death. When we compare the customs of other times and other nations under similar circumstances, we find that some people wear white clothes or smear themselves with yellow ochre; in some tribes the men disguise themselves as women; or again, after a funeral they enter the house by the back door, or take refuge in a subterraneous cave. The meaning is now apparent. All these steps are taken in order that the ghost of the dead man may be baffled. Thus light is thrown upon primitive ideas about the dead. We see (1) that the activity of each individual is supposed to continue even after death; (2) that this activity is likely to be of a malevolent character; and (3) that the ghost can easily be cheated by the most transparent devices. Incidentally we also see the reason for other practices, such as the bolting and barring of windows and doors after a death has v111. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Schola to Cathedral: A Study of Early Christian Architecture, and Its Relation to the Life of the Church The history of Christian architecture can be traced in existing monuments as far back as the fourth century. We find it then already represented by imposing buildings, with a distinct plan and an elaborate system of decoration, presupposing a period of tentative efforts. The record of these efforts lies however beneath the surface. The monu mental evidence oi them is but slight, and it is only by a search into literary records that we can discern their form and character. Book The Early Days of Christianity Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Christianity, Vol. 1 I complete in these volumes the work which has absorbed such leisure as could be spared from many and onerous duties during the last twelve years. My object has been to furnish English readers with a companion, partly historic and partly expository, to the whole of the New Testament. By attention to the minutest details of the original, by availing myself to the best of my power of the results of modern criticism, by trying to concentrate upon the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists such light as may be derived from Jewish, Pagan, or Christian sources, I have endeavoured to fulfil my ordination vow and to show diligence in such studies as help to the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. The Life of Christ was intended mainly as a commentary upon the Gospels. It was written in such a form as should reproduce whatever I had been able to learn from the close examination of every word which they contain, and should at the same time set forth the living reality of the scenes recorded. In the Life of St. Paul I wished to incorporate the details of the Acts of the Apostles with such biographical incidents as can be derived from the Epistles of St. Paul; and to take. Book The Theology of the Early Christian Church Vol 2

Download or read book The Theology of the Early Christian Church Vol 2 written by James Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the Early Christian Church, Vol. 2: Exhibited in Quotations From the Writers of the First Three Centuries, With Reflections The following course of Lectures being designed to afford the means of judging, by copious extracts, of the theology of the first ages of the church, the reflections which are interspersed may be regarded as mere helps to the formation of just conclusions, and may be adopted or rejected according to the degree of evidence which they present. As the selections are the result of an independent research in the works of each writer, the translations also were made at the same time, and are so far literal, perhaps, as to be often inelegant; but it is only by this more simple honest course that the cause of truth is to be maintained and advanced. On all great questions the quotations are sufficiently continuous to enable the reader to judge of the connexion; and where the extracts are brief, the references are so minute as to enable the scholar to verify the sense. When this depends on the rendering of a few words, these are given in a foot note; but to have furnished the originals of the whole would have required a second volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practices of the Early Christians Considered The object contemplated in re-publishing this essay, is not personal emolument, but simply, that multitudes now pro fessing religion, especially the young, who, there is reason to fear, are still many of them ignorant of the nature of that kingdom, which is not of this world, ' may be instructed in the knowledge of that order of worship which the exalted Head of the church has instituted to be observed by all his disciples to the end of time. If this object be in any degree realized, I shall feel amply rewarded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
