Book Die Macht des Ged chtnisses Entstehung und Wandel kommunaler Schriftkultur im sp tmittelalterlichen Augsburg

Download or read book Die Macht des Ged chtnisses Entstehung und Wandel kommunaler Schriftkultur im sp tmittelalterlichen Augsburg written by Mathias Franc Kluge and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Quest for an Appropriate Past in Literature Art and Architecture

Download or read book The Quest for an Appropriate Past in Literature Art and Architecture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700. Contributors include: Barbara Arciszewska, Bianca De Divitiis, Karl Enenkel, Hubertus Günther, Thomas Haye, Harald Hendrix, Stephan Hoppe, Marc Laureys, Frédérique Lemerle, Coen Maas, Anne-Françoise Morel, Kristoffer Neville, Konrad Ottenheym, Yves Pauwels, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, David Rijser, Bernd Roling, Nuno Senos, Paul Smith, Pieter Vlaardingerbroek, and Matthew Walker.

Download or read book God s Scribe written by Jeff Rider and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galbert of Bruges's De multro, traditione, et occisione gloriosi Karoli comitis Flandriarum is an eyewitness account of the assassination of Charles the Good, Count of Flanders, in 1127 and the ensuing civil war. This book forms a companion to the text which was discovered in the 15th century in Bruges and has subsequently been available in French translation. Jeff Rider argues that this is not a true journal but a revised and edited history of events between March 1127 and July 1128. He discusses how the chronicle developed, Galbert's sources, how he organised his notes and wrote his text and its literary qualities. This is a detailed study of an important piece of historical writing. One third of the book comprises notes and appendices.

Book A Humanist in Reformation Politics

Download or read book A Humanist in Reformation Politics written by Mads L. Jensen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first contextual account of the political philosophy and natural law theory of the German reformer Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560). Mads Langballe Jensen presents Melanchthon as a significant political thinker in his own right and an engaged scholar drawing on the intellectual arsenal of renaissance humanism to develop a new Protestant political philosophy. As such, he also shows how and why natural law theories first became integral to Protestant political thought in response to the political and religious conflicts of the Reformation. This study offers new, contextual studies of a wide range of Melanchthon's works including his early humanist orations, commentaries on Aristotle's ethics and politics, Melanchthon's own textbooks on moral and political philosophy, and polemical works.

Book Zealots for Souls

  • ISBN : 3110540290

Download or read book Zealots for Souls written by Anne Huijbers and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zealots for souls draws attention to the impact of the Observant reforms within the Order of Preachers, and ambitiously stirs up a broad scope of questions pertaining to the institutional narratives produced within the order between c. 1388 and 1517. Through the narratives and the forms of remembrance they fostered, the author traces the development of contemporary characteristics of the Dominican self-understanding. The book shows the fluid boundaries between the genres (order chronicles, convent chronicles, collective biographies), highlights the interplay between the narrative and the intended audience, addresses the complex question of authorship, and assesses the indebtedness of 'modern' (printed) narratives to older chronicles or biographical collections. The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations.
