Book A Method to Assess the Implications of Future Urban Expansion on Rural Land

Download or read book A Method to Assess the Implications of Future Urban Expansion on Rural Land written by Chris Cocklin and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Canada, as elsewhere, there has been an outward expansion of urban centres in order to accommodate the land demands for urban activities. A variety of resource conflicts have arisen as a result, one of the most actively discussed in recent times being the development for urban uses of land with high capability for renewable uses. While there have been numerous studies undertaken in an effort to estimate the extent and rate of conversions of rural land, especially agricultural land, to urban land uses, there has been much less attention devoted to estimating the extent and possible implications of future land conversions. In this report an approach to estimating future rural to urban land conversions is described and a method to assess the implications of land conversions in terms of the land resource for rural land use activities is developed. A pilot study, implemented to assess the implications of future land conversions for agriculture in Ontario, provides an illustration of the approaches described"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Second World War, Canada was a rural country. Unlike most industrializing countries, Canada’s rural population grew throughout the century after 1871 – even if it declined as a proportion of the total population. Rural Canadians also differed in their lives from rural populations elsewhere. In a country dominated by a harsh northern climate, a short growing season, isolated households and communities, and poor land, they typically relied on three ever-shifting pillars of support: the sale of cash crops, subsistence from the local environment, and wage work off the farm. Canada’s Rural Majority is an engaging and accessible history of this distinctive experience, including not only Canada’s farmers, but also the hunters, gardeners, fishers, miners, loggers, and cannery workers who lived and worked in rural Canada. Focusing on the household, the environment, and the community, Canada’s Rural Majority is a compelling classroom resource and an invaluable overview of this understudied aspect of Canadian history.

Book Demands On Rural Lands

Download or read book Demands On Rural Lands written by Chris Cocklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning for the use of rural lands in the developed countries of the world has become an increasingly contentious process as resources become more limited and conflicting needs grow stronger. The critical questions are "Which is more important—agriculture, livestock production, recreation, industry, or urban housing?" and "Who decides priorities and responsibilities for use?" The capacity of the land to meet all of the demands placed upon it, without serious environmental disruption, has become a major concern for all. Recognizing the exigencies of the situation, the contributors define and evaluate the theoretical and methodological frameworks within which rural land-use problems can be analyzed. In , the discussions focus on the identification and characterization of resources and competing users of rural lands, stressing that a careful articulation of the problem is essential to effective planning. is aimed at developing appropriate information bases useful in planning for the problems related to the management of these rural lands. The discussion of policy options for rural resource use in builds upon the material in the previous two sections to provide a framework for an analysis of rural resource use.

Download or read book Social Transformation in Rural Canada written by John R. Parkins and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly changing nature of life in Canadian rural communities is more than a simple response to economic conditions. People living in rural places are part of a new social agenda characterized by transformation of livelihoods, landscapes, and social relations – these profound changes invite us to reconsider the meanings of community, culture, and citizenship. Social Transformation in Rural Canada presents the work of researchers from a variety of fields who explore the dynamics of social transformation in rural settlements across several regions and sectors of the Canadian landscape. This volume provides a nuanced portrait of how local forms of action, adaptation, identity, and imagination are reshaping aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities in rural Canada. Unlike many previous studies, this work looks at rural communities not simply as places affected by external forces, but as incubators of change and social units with agency and purpose, many of which provide exemplary models for other communities facing challenges of transition.
