This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Levelling, Topography and Higher Surveying This volume, announced several years ago as being in preparation to follow the author's Land Surveying, was left at the time of his death unfinished. In preparing it for the press, the editor has endeavored to carry out, as far as possible, the plan already laid down. A considerable part of the volume has been given by the author, in the form of lectures to the civil engineering classes in Union College, and has been printed from the original manuscript. The best authors on the subjects treated have been consulted, in order to render the work as complete as possible. The principal authorities are the following: Begat, Bourns, Breton, Chauvenet, Fenwick, Frome, Gurley, Guyot, Jackson Lee, Narrien, Puissant, Salneuve, Simms, Smith, Stephenson, Wiesbach, Williams, and the papers of the United States Coast Survey. Wherever it has been necessary to refer to the elementary principles of surveying, reference has been made to Gillespie's Land Surveying (designated as L. S. for brevity), and the numbers of the articles referred to are enclosed in parentheses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Railway Surveying and Levelling: In Which the Author Has Endeavoured to Simplify the Most Approved Methods Now Adopted by Surveyors This instrument has passed through many im provements, and has now become, for angular work, the most useful. A description of it is rendered almost unnecessary, from our acquaintance with it, through the means of the numerous publi cations extant. A few words explanatory, sufficient for our Work, may be necessary, but its various improvements and many principles of construction, render it impossible to give more than a general idea. It consists of two circular plates of brass, horizontally placed on a tripod, having also a ver tical arc, or semicircle of brass. These plates and the are are furnished with spirit - levels and screws, by which means the instrument is brought to a level with the surface on which the tripod rests. On the vertical arc is placed a telescope, in the focus end of which are fixed, in some, two threads of silk, or hair, intersecting each other diagonally X or at. Book Railway Right of Way Surveying Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Right of Way Surveying Classic Reprint written by Albert I. Frye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Right-of-Way Surveying This little book outlines a modern system of right-of-way survey ing, leveling, and mapping. Though the system as a whole applies particularly to railroads, the adjustment diagram feature will be found useful in the special adjustment of streets, canals, highways, and old boundary lines. It is hoped the suggestions here given will save time in the organization and prosecution of the work and above all will lead to accurate and permanent results. The method of survey herein described must not be confused with the common one of using the outside head of rail as a base line for locating the various structural features. Vast sums of money have been spent for such surveys, leaving no permanent field reference to lines run and recording sets of maps without any measurements whatever. Many of them have been ordered under the directing influence of rushing some kind of survey through as quickly as possible for pur poses of reconstruction hence no criticism is here offered. But there is no excuse whatever for property surveys not referable to fixed base lines, whether they result in the scale maps above referred to or in the so-called very complete maps, showing instrument lines run, angles and measurements, direct from the field book. The former class of maps is of little practical value, while the latter contains a mass of data not directly available. Book Manual of Land Surveying

Download or read book Manual of Land Surveying written by David Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Land Surveying: With Tables The second is called a Diagonal Scale. The unit at the left end has a line diagonally across the ten equal spaces into which the scale is divided by parallel lines. Since the diagonal advances one unit in crossing the eu tire ten spaces, it must advance one-tenth In crossing one space, two-tenths in crossing two spaces, etc. Hence, if _we want a distance of seven spaces, for - example, we must measure the distance the diagonal has advanced when it has reached the line marked 7; Thus, a distance of would extend from the point where the diagonal cuts the seventh parallel to the point where the cross-line marked I cuts the same parallel. When we want a scale which will measure to hundredths, it can best be arranged as shown in the third part of the figure. The scale is divided longitudinally into ten spaces. The upper and lower lines of the left unit are divided each into ten equal parts. Diagonals are then drawn from 0 in the lower line, to 1 in the upper; from 1 in the lower, to 2 in the upper, etc. It is evident that one of these diagonals in crossing one space ad vances one-tenth of one-tenth of the unit; and hence the Scale can be used for measuring to hundredths. Book Surveying and Levelling Instruments Theoretically and Practically Described

Download or read book Surveying and Levelling Instruments Theoretically and Practically Described written by William Ford Stanley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surveying and Levelling Instruments, Theoretically and Practically Described: For Construction, Qualities, Selection, Preservation, Adjustments, and Uses; With Other Apparatus and Appliances Used by Civil Engineers and Surveyors Notes were taken for many years before the production of this work of queries that came before the author for reply relative to functional parts of surveying instruments. These bore most frequently reference to optical and magnetical subjects, and to the qualities and action of spirit level tubes, also occasionally to graduation and the qualities of clamp and tangent motions. It was therefore thought that it would be useful to give notes upon these subjects in detail as far as possible in early chapters. As the work proceeded it was found that this plan saved much space in avoiding the necessity for separate description when parts of complex instruments were afterwards described. To show the state of the art and render the work useful, it was necessary that the structure of surveying instruments should be given with sufficient detail to be worked out by the skilful manufacturer. Beyond this it was thought to be most important that the professional man, who must have limited experience of the qualities of workmanship, should be supplied with as many simple tests as possible for assuring the qualities of the instruments he might purchase or use, with details also of their adjustments. The First Part describes the instruments which are usually in the possession of the surveyor, and gives the methods of using them in surveying with the chain only, with the chain and theodolite on traverse surveying, and in minor triangulation. The determination of heights by levelling and by the measurement of vertical angles, is also dealt with. Only a few brief remarks have been made as to the effect of the spherical form of the earth on survey operations. The Second Part, now published, describes some modern and special instruments not SO generally possessed by surveyors, such as the tacheometer.
