On Saturday, May 15th, 1880, the Denby Dale new stone viaduct was opened for traffic. It was built by Messrs. Naylor Brothers, contractors. This replaced the old wooden structure which formerly spanned the valley, and is about a thousand yards long, at a high elevation throughout the greater part of its length, the highest part being 26 feet from the ground to the rail level. The stone work is snecked rubble throughout, and the arches are formed of parpoint masonry. Owing to its elevation the viaduct forms a striking object in the landscape, and is of a substantial and imposing character. The first half-yearly general meeting of the proprietors for 1881 was held at Manchester on Wednesday, August the 24th, when the directors declared a dividend at the rate of 4 per cent. This dwindling dividend again caused unpleasant remarks from the shareholders. One of them said he was disappointed at the small dividend, and he did not think that the true reason for it had been given. Although the working expenses and the cost of coal had increased, the trade of Lancashire had wonderfully improved, and a great many more spindles and looms were working this year than twelve months ago. If, with the present trade, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company could not increase its dividend, but had actually to decrease it, he was afraid there was not much prospect of better dividends in the future. The chairman told them that coal cost more because it had to be carried further, in consequence of the colliers' strike. He had a different belief to that given by the directors as to the reason why the Company was not paying a better dividend.
