Book excerpt: Excerpt from Assassination of the President: A Discourse on the Death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States With such a thought as this, we come to the house of God to-day. Such an occurrence as that which we now lament was never before known in the history of our land. It belongs to the incredible tales of the dark ages. It is out of place in such a land as ours. It hardly entered into our hearts to think it might occur; and this has been the very cause which left our nation's ruler defenceless, and gave the assassin opportunity to execute his plans, and yet to effect his escape boldly. Book Victory Turned Into Mourning

Download or read book Victory Turned Into Mourning written by Alfred E. Ives and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Victory Turned Into Mourning: A Discourse, on Occasion of the Death of Abraham Lincoln Late President of the United States, Preached at Castine 2 Samuel, XIX. 2: - "The victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people." A most unnatural rebellion against king David had just been suppressed by one sharp, decisive battle, and by the ignominious death of the rebel leader. David was an affectionate father as well as a sovereign; and though he had been compelled to take hasty flight from his capital, to save his life, finding no place of safety short of the eastern bank of the Jordan, - the whole kingdom, aside from this, being swept over by the sudden wave of the rebellion, - yet now, when the crisis was past, and the victory had given him security for his life and his throne, his thoughts became absorbed in the tragic fate of his son, - that indulged and favored but ambitious son, who had so wickedly plotted against the throne and the very life of his father, and had just been slain in the midst of his wickedness. Forgetting all other interests, the feelings of the father overcame the man and the sovereign, and he gave himself up to the agony of the moment. The army, which had remained faithful to the king, and had suffered, and fought, and bled, and conquered, leaving not a few of their number dead upon the field, flushed with the great victory, returned, expecting the thanks and congratulations of a grateful sovereign, so narrowly escaped from utter destruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death of President Lincoln: A Sermon, Preached in Saint Paul's Chapel, New York, on Wednesday, April 19, 1865 These were the last words of David. He spake them as he saw the time drawing near when he must go the way of all the earth; they were the last song of the Psalmist. Each man knows best the law of his own profession; he, as a ruler, knew what a ruler ought to be, and delivered his judgment on that subject before he died. The sentence on his own performances he left his Lord to utter; but the general law by which he ought to have guided his course, he was moved so to state and express in the moment in which the rod of empire was about to be taken from his relaxing hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln: Late President of the United States, Pronounced at the City Hall, Springfield, Mass;, April 19, 1865 Therefore, without trying to tell how much we loved him, how much we honored him, and how deeply and tenderly We mourn his loss, let us briefly trace the reasons why his death has made so deep an impression upon us. It is not five years since the nation knew but little of Abraham Lin coln. We had heard of him as a man much honored by the members of a single party - not then dominant - in his own state. We had seen something Of his work; We knew that he was held to be a man of notable 'and peculiar power, and of pure character and life. Indeed, it is doubt ful whether the nation knew enough Of him to justify the selection made by the convention which presented him to the country as a candidate. For its highest office. To this office, however, he was triumphantly elected, and since that time his life has run like a thread of gold through the history of the most remarkable period Of the nation's ex istence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: Delivered at Rhinebeck, N. Y., April 19, 1865, at a Public Demonstration of the Citizens O, how appalling the intelligence borne to us on swift wing four days ago, that our beloved President was dead; and when the circumstances of his death were narrated dumbness for a time seized the masses. Spontaneously the store, the shop, the fields were vacated. The pressure upon the heart was so great as to check every impulse of business. Men gathered in public places as if seeking for sympathy. At times it was impossible to realize the dreadful fact. It Seemed rather that each had awakened out of a frightful dream. And the few davs that have since elapsed find us but little bet ter prepared to realize the event. It still seems but a troubled dream.
