Book Sorrow and Consolation in Italian Humanism

Download or read book Sorrow and Consolation in Italian Humanism written by George W. McClure and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George McClure offers here a far-reaching analysis of the role of consolation in Italian Renaissance culture, showing how the humanists' interest in despair, and their effort to open up this realm in both social and personal terms, signaled a shift toward a heightened secularization in European thought. Analyzing works by fourteenth-and fifteenth-century writers, from Petrarch to Marsilio Ficino, McClure examines the treatment of such problems as bereavement, fear of death, illness, despair, and misfortune. These writers, who evinced a belief in the legitimacy of secular sadness, tried to forge a wisdom that in their view dealt more realistically with the art of living and dying than did the disputations of scholastic philosophy and theology. Arguing that consolatory concerns helped spur the revival of classical schools of psychological thought, McClure reveals that the humanists sought comfort from once-neglected troves of Stoic, Peripatetic, Epicurean, Platonic, and Christian thought. He contends that the humanists' pursuit of solace and their duty as consolers provided not only a forum but perhaps also an incentive for the articulation of prominent Renaissance themes concerning immortality, the dignity of man, and the sanctity of worldly endeavor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madonna Pia: A Tragedy, and Three Other Dramas OF the four dramas in this volume, two have hitherto remained unpublished. Madonna Pia was written many years ago with a view to performance. It was suggested by a powerful dramatic sketch called Malaria, in one Act, which had a short life upon the Paris stage. To this sketch two Acts were prefixed, and to these the original, which forms the third Act, was fitted with some necessary adaptations. The Gladia tor of Ravenna, probably the finest piece of dramatic writing produced on the modern German stage, was translated many years ago, and printed for private cir culation. King René's Daughter, from the Danish of Henrik Hertz, having run through two editions, a third has been called for, and it has been included in the present volume. The translation of The Camp of Wallenstein, which appeared in Blackwood's Maga zine, ' has been added to make it accessible in a more convenient form. Book Dante and Governance

Download or read book Dante and Governance written by John Robert Woodhouse and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ante and Governance brings to the most grandiose of Dante's messages in the ivine Comedy critical viewpoints whose originality would, at any time, constitute an important addition to Dante scholarship, but the book is also notable for an approach which during the course of its compositionspontaneously evolved as pragmatic and historical, particularly when seen against much contemporary Dante cricism. It explores Dante's breathtaking ambition to convince Europe's rulers and their subjects to create and embrace a universal peace, guaranteed by Pope and Holy Roman Emperor, which mightafford serenity for mankind fully to develop its wonderful potentialities. In that context, a group of scholars, internationally known for their expertise not only in Dante studies but also in medieval literature and history, was invited to Oxford to discuss the poet's objectives. Each chose toargue a case from a close reading of Dante's own texts, using clear and jargon-free lamguage. Those deliberations created a well-focused and coherent group of papers on a variety of subjects, ranging from an aesthetic appreciation of Dante's depiction of free-will and moral responsibility, to afeminist perception of his attitude to the role of women in fourteenth-century Florentine public life.
