Book excerpt: Lakshmi Purana, as the title explains, is the story of goddess Lakshmi in simple narrative verses. It is recited in every household of Odisha in the Hindu month of Margashira on all the four Thursdays. In most households, this text is recited throughout the year, every Thursday. As a creative piece of work, the text stands on its own aesthetic as well as sociological strength. The text draws on the myths and folklore of the Jagannath temple of Puri and has no correspondence in the Sanskrit Puranic tradition. Besides its manifestly feminist orientation, the text also carries a brief against human evils such as untouchability and arrogance of the upper class. Foreword is written by eminent Odia author Hrushikesh Panda.

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 9389611903
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Bonding with the Lord written by and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few other Hindu gods guide a regional consciousness, pervade walks of everyday life and define a collective psyche the way Lord Jagannath does in Odisha and its contiguous areas. Jagannath is metonymic of Odisha and the Odia way of life, arguably much more than any other god for a particular geography or its peoples. While not derecognising the historical and the spiritual aspects of Jagannath, Bonding with the Lord attempts to look at the deployment of Jagannath in contemporary cultural practices involving the sensorium in the widest sense. The project of a cultural Jagannath not only materialises him in people's everyday practices but also democratises scholarship on him. The expansion of the scope of research on Jagannath to cultural expressions in a more encompassing way rather than confining to 'elitist' religious/literary sources makes him an everyday presence and significantly enhances his sphere of influence. Jagannath's 'tribal' origin, his association with Buddhism and Jainism and his avatari status make him an all-encompassing, multilayered symbol and a treasure trove for multiple interpretations.

Book Beyond Orientalism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fred Dallmayr
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1996-12-12
  • ISBN : 143840039X
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Beyond Orientalism written by Fred Dallmayr and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1996-12-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Orientalism explores the confluence of contemporary Western (especially Continental) philosophy, with its focus on otherness and difference, and the ongoing process of globalization or the emergence of the "global village." The basic question raised in the book is: What will be the prevailing life-form or discourse of the global village? Will it be the discourse of Western science, industry, and metaphysics which, under the banner of modernization and development, seeks to homogenize the world in its image? In Said's work, this strategy was labeled "Orientalism." Or will it be possible to move "beyond Orientalism" in the direction neither of global uniformity nor radical fragmentation? After discussing the broad range of possible "modes of cross-cultural encounter" in a historical perspective, the book develops as a preferred option the notion of a deconstructive dialogue or a "hermeneutics of difference" which respects otherness beyond assimilation. This hermeneutics is illustrated in chapters examining several bridge-builders between cultures, primarily the Indian philosophers Radhakrishnan and J. L. Mehta and the Indologist Halbfass. The remaining chapters are devoted to more concrete social-political problems, including issues of modernization, multiculturalism, and the prospects of a globalized democracy which bids farewell to Orientalism and Eurocentrism.

Book China India and Alternative Asian Modernities

Download or read book China India and Alternative Asian Modernities written by Sanjay Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conception of modernity as a radical rupture from the past runs parallel to the conception of Europe as the primary locus of global history. The essays in this volume contest the temporal and spatial divisions—between past and present, modernity and tradition, and Europe’s progress and Asia’s stasis—which the conventional narrative of modernity creates. Drawing on early modern Chinese and Indian history and culture instead, the authors of the book explore the provenance of modernity beyond the west to see it in a transcultural and pluralistic light. The central argument of this volume is that modernity does not have a singular core or essence—a causal centre. Its key features need to be disaggregated and new configurations and combinations imagined. By studying the Bhakti movement, Confucian democracy, and the maritime and agrarian economies of China and India, this book enlarges the terms of debate and revisits devalued terms and concepts like tradition, religion, authority, and rural as resources for modernity. This book will be of great interest to researchers and academicians working in the areas of history, Sociology, Cultural Studies, literature, geopolitics, South Asian and East Asian Studies.

Book Hinduism and the Man on the Cross

Download or read book Hinduism and the Man on the Cross written by Norman Law and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason for writing this book is because of God's irrefutable love for the people of India through His only Begotten son, Jesus Christ. This book explores the records of archeology, history of migration, language, and religion of Hinduism, and the findings are astonishing in that it is not what we normally expect. The author described the character and attributes of the six major Hindu deities: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, Krishna, and Rama as written in the ancient sacred Vedic Hindu texts: Rig Veda, Samaveda, Yajur (Black and White) Vedas, Atharva Veda, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Puranas, and they are definitely not as common beliefs or rumors passed down from generation to generation. A comparison is made with the character and attributes of God as described in the Christian Bible. Similarly, the author explores the origin of Hinduism's major doctrines: Krishna's claims, the Samsara cycle, Trimurti, avatars, dharma, self-realizations, renunciation of and freedom from attachments, yogic meditation, demonic possession, and minor doctrines like worship, idol worship, sin, death incarnation, castes, hell, curses, women, astrology, etc. as found in the ancient sacred Vedic texts as mentioned above and compared them with the theology, doctrines, and practices as found in the Christian Bible.

Book Textual Lives of Caste Across the Ages

Download or read book Textual Lives of Caste Across the Ages written by Prathama Banerjee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume explore the myriad ways in which caste (varna and jati) has been theorized and critiqued in multiple philosophical, religious, logical and narrative traditions in India. Spanning ancient, medieval and modern times, and in diverse classical and vernacular languages, the chapters show how the social fact of caste, and imaginations of kinship, community and humanity were historically subject to epistemological, spiritual, and existential debate in both elite and popular circles in India. Textual Lives of Caste Across the Ages seeks to bridge the interdisciplinary gap between historians and sociologists by focusing on texts that help us think across the sociological and philosophical, the political and the religious, the epistemological and the aesthetic, and indeed, the elite and the popular. The volume also sets up a conversation between scholars specializing in different regions, archives, and historical periods and demonstrates how caste imaginaries have been deeply diverse and contested in India's past. Reconstructing these diverse traditions of social and existential criticism helps us in our contemporary struggles against caste hierarchy and untouchability and enriches our contemporary critical repertoire.

Book Women Reinventing Development

Download or read book Women Reinventing Development written by Asha Hans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the State of Odisha have played an important role in development, however they remain mostly invisible in policy and research. This anthology undertakes a journey from the States' rich historical tradition to its present stage of development to locate women's spaces in this process. This book helps in refocusing attention on economic, political and social dimensions of women and development. Through discussing areas of health, education, employment, migration and political role of women in decision-making institutions, the authors suggest that only when women or any oppressed groups gained substantially on these fronts, would it have greater dignity and power in society. The absence of analytical work on women's role in the development of the State in being increasingly felt. This volume, we hope, will fill to some extent, the intellectual gap in feminist literature. This book is co-published with Aakar Books, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print versions of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
