Book excerpt: Denver's Lakeside Amusement Park details the history of Lakeside, exploring how it has managed to remain in business for more than a century (something less than thirty amusement parks have accomplished), and offers a unique view on larger changes in society and the amusement park industry itself. Once nicknamed White City in part for its glittering display of more than 100,000 lights, the park opened in 1908 in conjunction with Denver's participation in the national City Beautiful movement. It was a park for Denver elites, with fifty different forms of amusement, including the Lakeshore Railway and the Velvet Coaster, a casino, a ballroom, a theater, a skating rink, and avenues decorated with Greek statues. But after metropolitan growth, technological innovation, and cultural shifts in Denver, it began to cater to a working-class demographic as well. Additions of neon and fluorescent lighting, roller coasters like the Wild Chipmunk, attractions like the Fun House and Lakeside Speedway, and rides like the Scrambler, the Spider, and most recently the drop tower Zoom changed the face and feel of Lakeside between 1908 and 2008. Home to the only natural lake in San Diego County, Lakeside offered visitors throughout the century a scenic backdrop for boating, fishing, hunting, riding, and hiking. Captured here in over 200 vintage images is the history of this town located just 25 miles east of San Diego. After the San Diego Mission was established in 1769, the Padres explored the backcountry, seeking grazing lands for their livestock. Following the San Diego River upstream they came to a broad valley, which they named El Cajon, "the box." In 1886, 6,600 acres were sold to the El Cajon Land Company for the Lakeside town site and a large inn was built as a resort. Due in large part to the trains coming through Lakeside in 1889, Lakeside had become a thriving community by the turn of the century.

While it began life in 1886 as a sparsely traveled passenger hauler, it soon became one of the most profitable and interesting railroads in the country. Using 0-6-0 steam switch locomotives, the L&M consistently hauled more tonnage and earned more revenue per mile than many larger and more boastful roads. Investors built the Lakeside & Marblehead to serve the burgeoning lime industry of Marblehead and heavy seasonal passenger traffic to Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula’s seasonal resort, but it was slow going at first. The railroad had nearly perished when the Kelley Island Lime & Transport Company, a prosperous basic materials company, merged it, along with area stone quarry operations, into one of the world’s largest limestone production facilities. Using the L&M and an extensive narrow-gauge stone transportation system at Marblehead, the company supported steel production by annually sending millions of tons of flux stone to furnaces across the Midwest. Although the Lakeside & Marblehead closed in 1964 and the owners tore it up in 1997, this book brings nearly every aspect of the line back to life, preserving it for posterity. The whole story in all its variety is here: 0-6-0 switch engines, Fairbanks-Morse and McKeen gasoline motor cars, scores of Shay narrow gauge locomotives, a car ferry, the boat loading dock at Marblehead, all the quarry’s stone production plants, accidents and collisions, and the line’s famed sharing of facilities with the Toledo, Port Clinton & Lakeside Railway electric interurban line. Their intellectual levels are different. They may come from broken homes. They may be hungry and have all the other influences on their lives. We can't forget that. Yet as I pass two other high schools on the way to work, everything on the outside appears orderly. Students file through the doors and get to their classes. I wonder if these schools have the same knuckleheads, drug dealers, troublemakers that my school does--and I know that they do. I want to take you to a year in my teaching past that was particularly unique. Mind you, a vast majority of the students followed the rules, got to class on time, did their homework, etc. Most teachers also did the right things.But from time to time, the wrong mix of students and the wrong mix of teachers have educators questioning their career choice. There are students that economically have more than others. Drugs from one group to another is increasing. Drinking is rampant, and some teachers need to brush up on their professionalism. Parents too have found the need for improvement.
