Book Aquatic Snails of the Snake and Green River Basins of Wyoming

Download or read book Aquatic Snails of the Snake and Green River Basins of Wyoming written by Lusha M. Tronstad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater snails are a diverse group of mollusks that live in a variety of aquatic ecosystems. Many snail species are of conservation concern around the globe. About 37-39 species of aquatic snails likely live in Wyoming. The current study surveyed the Snake and Green River basins in Wyoming and identified 22 species and possibly discovered a new operculate snail. We surveyed streams, wetlands, lakes and springs throughout the basins at randomly selected locations. We measured habitat characteristics and basic water quality at each site. Snails were usually most abundant in ecosystems with higher standing stocks of algae, on solid substrate (e.g., wood or aquatic vegetation) and in habitats with slower water species in Wyoming. The key is a work in progress that will be continually updated to reflect changes in taxonomy and new knowledge. We hope the snail key will be used throughout the state to unify snail identification and create better data on Wyoming snails.

Book Habitats of Snails and Snails as Habitats

Download or read book Habitats of Snails and Snails as Habitats written by Charlotte F. Narr and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater gastropods, imperiled globally, have been deemed North America's most vulnerable major animal group. Habitat loss, invasive species, and inadequate information about species distributions all obstruct freshwater gastropod conservation. To assess the distributions and critical habitats for gastropods classified by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department as "Species of Greatest Conservation Need," I qualitatively surveyed freshwater snails in two major river drainages of the North Platte and Bighorn rivers in Wyoming. I sampled freshwater snails from 110 sites in 24 subdrainages from June through August 2009 and gathered information about distributions and habitat associations. I found members of 5 freshwater gastropod families and 11 genera distributed in our survey. Recent macroinvertebrate sampling efforts suggested that aquatic snails were sparsely distributed within my target drainages. The presence of freshwater snails at most sites sampled for my survey indicates that these previous methods used to sample macroinvertebrates were not effective indicators of the presence of freshwater snails. Although invasive New Zealand mudsnails have been reported in the survey area, I did not find these snails. Contrary to expectations, I found no statistical evidence for habitat differentiation by gastropod Family. I also investigated how the elemental composition and fitness of a snail and its trematode parasite vary in response to diets contrasting in quality and quantity. Phosphorus and nitrogen often limit the secondary production of herbivores like snails. Consumers use various mechanisms to attain limiting elements from their environment in the precise proportions that their own elemental composition and secondary productivity require. By comparing the % elemental composition (in terms of phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon) of a trematode parasite to that of its snail host, we were able to assess the quality of a snail as a resource for a trematode. When I experimentally manipulated the diet of parasitized snails, I found that they were able to maintain relatively homeostatic elemental compositions in the face of varying elemental resources and parasitism. In contrast to predictions of ecological stoichiometry, the trematode that I studied benefited (released more of its transmission stage) from diets that created an elemental imbalance between the parasite and host.

Book Freshwater Snails of Africa and Their Medical Importance

Download or read book Freshwater Snails of Africa and Their Medical Importance written by David Seymour Brown and published by Taylor & Francis Group. This book was released on 1980 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively revised to take account of advances made since the publication of the first edition in 1980, this volume provides a synthesis of a wide range of information from the fields of malacology and parasitology in a review of the entire snail fauna of fresh and brackish waters in Africa and neighboring islands, with (bandw) illustrations of the shells of some 350 species. Practical aids are the glossary of malacological terms, identification keys to snail genera, and a checklist of species. In later chapters, detailed consideration is given to the relationships between parasites and snails, snail control, taxonomy and biology of the snail genus Bulinus, snail distribution and population dynamics in relation to environmental factors, composition of snail faunas both local and regional, and biogeography.
