Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Bowstring, or South Shore of Lake Superior They traveled and they traveled And the next thing they did spy Was the moon behind a hill-top, And that they left behind - look a' thar! Now, the one he said it was the moon But the other he said 'nay, ' So they 'lowed it was a green cheese With the rind all cut away - look a' thar! - College Song. One of the most original of my acquaintances said to me once that he had spent an evening with M. Flammarion, the greatest of astronomers, and had taken that occasion to catechise the master about other worlds than ours. "And do you know," said he, "that after hearing about all the other planets I have come to the conviction that this is a good enough world for me? It is true that this world has defects; for instance, a man cannot have his picture put on the postage stamps until after he is dead - but, take it all in all, I shall be satisfied if I get my share of all the fun and beauty, and sight-seeing and good eating and pleasant company this rolling pill affords without caring a snap to live in Saturn and get a couple of celestial belts thrown in, like chromos." But one of the best features of life on this planet is the fact that no man or set of men can make it different. In spite of them, it keeps rolling around and exposing to solar view characteristics and portions in which they take no interest. A powerful body of persons, for instance, is satisfied to go to Newport every year at vast expense, to move in a tiny set whose lives are devoted to proving that the Declaration of Independence is all wrong, and that only a few are created equal while all the rest are vulgar. A still more influential body of persons think the sum of human happiness is reached if they can go to Brighton, England, to ride or walk up and down a stone embankment with towering hotels on one side and a cold ocean, unfit for either bathing or boating, on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Review of Copper, Iron, Silver, Slate: And Other Material Interests of the South Shore of Lake Superior In this connection I desire to return my sincere thanks to Hon. John H. Forster, one of the earliest among the pioneers of the copper region, for a very nearly complete history Of the discovery and development of the copper interest, and at the same time, to beg his pardon for having so elaborated his valuable paper as to impair, in some degree, the style and harmony of his composition. I am also indebted to Jacob Houghton, A. R. Harlow, and Hon. Peter White, for much valuable information, aside from the former's very interesting paper on the Ancient Copper Miners of Lake Superior. The geology of the Iron District, by Chas. E. Wright, M. E., though brief is exhaustive, and written in words that are within the comprehension of others than scientists. It is pronounced the ablest and most reliable paper upon the subject that has ever been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a contribution to the Biological Survey of the State, which the Legislature authorized you to supervise and execute by Act No. 250 of the Session of 1905. The following report is the result of a natural history survey made in the Porcupine Mountains and on Isle Royale by a party from the University Museum, University of Michigan. It is not a mere list of plants and animals, but a study of these forms in relation to their surroundings. It is thus a contribution to the natural history of the Upper Peninsula, and in addition to its scientific value will, I trust, be of use to teachers in all parts of this region and stimulate them in the study of the forms of life about them. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ferns and Flowering Plants of Isle Royale, Michigan After the formation of the lava beds, this area passed through a period during which there was an elevation Of the rock strata, erosion, depression, depositions Of new material, then elevation, tilting, and faulting, all Of of which resulted in the formation Of long narrow ridges with intervening valleys, which lie parallel to the long axis of the island. The rock strata were tilted toward the south shore of Lake Superior, and the degree Of tilting varies from 9° to 43° in various places. Then softer strata dis integrated, leaving the truncated ridges with gentle slopes on the southern side and with abrupt, steep slopes on the northern side. The ridges are mainly flat-topped, and the mam one, commonly called the Greenstone Ridge, is a divide which extends in the center and for the entire length of the island. This is broken into low gaps in three or four places. On this ridge there are three places which have an elevation above 500 feet according to contours drawn by Lane in 1908. Unpublished studies of George M. Stanley show that the highest portion Of the Greenstone Ridge is on the southwestern part Of the island and has an elevation close to 800 feet above lake level. Near the north shore Of the island is another ridge, the Minong Trap Ridge, which extends nearly the length Of the island and is above the 300-foot contour line. South of the Greenstone Ridge is a ridge which is much broker} but contains many points reaching above the 300-foot level. In addition to these main ridges there are many smaller intervening ones. Drainage is mostly parallel with the ridges. Some of the small streams in the intervening valleys empty into Lake Superior at the northeastern end, and others flow to the southwestern end. A few streams flow crosswise of the island in low gaps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
