Download or read book The American Vitruvius written by Werner Hegemann and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas of architectural design advocates rational as well as humanistic principles in the development of the urban environment. Drawing upon the ideals that inspired the great Roman architect, it promotes the Vitruvian maxims of longevity, beauty, and commodity. It also defines the thinking behind modern American city planning. First published in 1922, The American Vitruvius arose from a collaboration between two students of American urbanism. Werner Hegemann, an urban planner, and Elbert Peets, a graduate of Harvard's School of Landscape Architecture, selected more than 1,200 plans, elevations, and perspective views. Their choices depict a tremendous variety of European and American structures dating from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century. Ranging from Rome's vast Piazza San Pietro to modest German and English garden suburbs, this volume explores all manner of urban design, including American college campuses, parks, and cemeteries; L'Enfant's plan of Washington, DC; and other civic centers. Design Book Review hailed this classic as "the most complete single-volume survey of canonical cases of urbanism," offering "a scintillating collection of uncommon and forgotten designs." An essential reference for every architect and student of architecture, this affordable edition is of particular value in light of the current New Urbanism trend.

Download or read book Warren H Manning written by Robin Karson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren H. Manning's (1860-1938) national practice comprised more than sixteen hundred landscape design and planning projects throughout North America, from small home grounds to estates, cemeteries, college campuses, parks and park systems, and new industrial towns. Manning approached his design and planning projects from an environmental perspective, conceptualizing projects as components of larger regional (in some cases, national) systems, a method that contrasted sharply with those of his stylistically oriented colleagues. In this regard, as in many others, Manning had been influenced by his years with the Olmsted firm, where the foundations of his resource-based approach to design were forged. Manning's overlay map methods, later adopted by the renowned landscape architect Ian McHarg, providedthe basis for computer mapping software in widespread use today. One of the eleven founders of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Manning also ran one of the nation's largest offices, where he trained several influential designers, including Fletcher Steele, A. D. Taylor, Charles Gillette, and Dan Kiley. After Manning's death, his reputation slipped into obscurity. Contributors to the Warren H. Manning Research Project have worked more than a decade to assess current conditions of his built projects and to compile a richly illustrated compendium of site essays that illuminate the range, scope, and significance of Manning's notable career with specially commissioned photographs by Carol Betsch.

Part 7 contains guidelines to facilitate communication between the Reserve and Park management. Finally, excerpts are presented from two important documents that regulate activities in the Reserve: the Algonquin Provincial Park Management Plan and the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Parks & Conservation Reserves.

Book excerpt: Steeped in a strong Midwestern tradition of naturalism, JJR embraces the tenets of respecting and working with the inherent natural features of a landscape. JJR's projects address the complex relationship between humans and their environment. It believes that good design goes hand-in-hand with good planning, a process that encompasses everything from civil engineering and landscape architecture to environmental science, urban planning and much more. The work of JJR responds to the local and regional context, blending the natural with the built, and the site with the community. More than forty projects are examined in detail in this superb monograph; projects include university campuses, sutainable environments, vital cities, building communities, and waterfront projects; all are presented with colour photography, maps, plans and drawings.
