Book A Historical Survey Kashmir Through The Ages 5000 B C To 1960 A D

Download or read book A Historical Survey Kashmir Through The Ages 5000 B C To 1960 A D written by Krishan Lal Kalla and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I remember, when I was a student at College, a Professor asked the students if they knew anything about the conquests of Latitaditya. Everyone was dumb. I felt ashamed. This is why I did not take up history in my Degree course. After leaving the College I started studying available literature on the history of Kashmir. Somehow, I prepared a rough account which was published in the columns of the Akhbar-i-aam of Lahore in serial order. This was followed up by independent publications in 1925, 1932, 1946 and 1954. It did invite attention but there was little response from those for whom it was primarily meant. Nevertheless, the book has since grown from fact to fact and page to page. It still remains a bird s eye-view account and serves its own purpose. The short-comings in previous editions have been mostly removed. A fresh chapter on Cultural and Economic heritage has been added.

Download or read book Cities Identity Through Architecture and Arts written by Yasser Mahgoub and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of topics relating to architecture and urban design, such as the conservation of cities’ culture and identity through design and planning processes, various ideologies and approaches to achieving more sustainable cities while retaining their identities, and strategies to help cities advertise themselves on the global market. Every city has its own unique identity, which is revealed through its physical and visual form. It is seen through the eyes of its inhabitants and visitors, and is where their collective memories are shaped. In turn, these factors affect tourism, education, culture & economic prosperity, in addition to other aspects, making a city’s identity one of its main assets. Cities’ identities are constructed and developed over time and are constantly evolving physically, culturally and sociologically. This book explains how architecture and the arts can embody the historical, cultural and economic characteristics of the city. It also demonstrates how cities’ memories play a vital role in preserving their physical and nonphysical heritage. Furthermore, it examines the transformation of cities and urban cultures, and investigates the various new approaches developed in contemporary arts and architecture. Given its scope, the book is a valuable resource for a variety of readers, including students, educators, researchers and practitioners in the fields of city planning, urban design, architecture and the arts.

Download or read book Colonial Lahore written by Ian Talbot and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of studies of colonial Lahore in recent years have explored such themes as the city's modernity, its cosmopolitanism and the rise of communalism which culminated in the bloodletting of 1947. This first synoptic history moves away from the prism of the Great Divide of 1947 to examine the cultural and social connections which linked colonial Lahore with North India and beyond. In contrast to portrayals of Lahore as inward looking and a world unto itself, the authors argue that imperial globalisation intensified long established exchanges of goods, people and ideas. Ian Talbot and Tahir Kamran's book is reflective of concerns arising from the global history of Empire and the new urban history of South Asia. These are addressed thematically rather than through a conventional chronological narrative, as the book uncovers previously neglected areas of Lahore's history, including the links between Lahore's and Bombay's early film industries and the impact on the 'tourist gaze' of the consumption of both text and visual representation of India in newsreels and photographs.
