Book The Gold in the Rings

Download or read book The Gold in the Rings written by Stephen R Wenn and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a showcase for amateur athletics, the Olympic Games have become a global entertainment colossus powered by corporate sponsorship and professional participation. Stephen R. Wenn and Robert K. Barney offer the inside story of this transformation by examining the far-sighted leadership and decision-making acumen of four International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidents: Avery Brundage, Lord Killanin, Juan Antonio Samaranch, and Jacques Rogge. Blending biography with historical storytelling, the authors explore the evolution of Olympic commercialism from Brundage's uneasy acceptance of television rights fees through the revenue generation strategies that followed the Salt Lake City bid scandal to the present day. Throughout, Wenn and Barney draw on their decades of studying Olympic history to dissect the personalities, conflicts, and controversies behind the Games' embrace of the business of spectacle. Entertaining and expert, The Gold in the Rings maps the Olympics' course from paragon of purity to billion-dollar profits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chlamydia pneumoniae is now recognized as an important human pathogen. Chlamydia pneumoniae is involved in 5%-15% of community acquired pneumonias, and recent data indicate its relevance in severe pneumonia and as a respiratory pathogen in immunocompromised subjects. A causal role for Chlamydia pneumoniae in the initiation, exacerbations and promotion of asthma has been suggested. Approximately 5% of chronic bronchitis exacerbations have been attributed to Chlamydia pneumoniae infections, and chronic infection may facilitate access of other pathogens to the lower respiratory tract. Another field of potential great social impact is the possible involvement of Chlamydia pneumoniae in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases. This book presents the current state-of-the-art knowledge on Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and highlights future lines of research.

Book Skyscrapers Hide the Heavens

Download or read book Skyscrapers Hide the Heavens written by J.R. Miller and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-05-17 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly acclaimed when the first edition appeared in 1989, "Skyscrapers Hide the Heavens" is the first comprehensive account of Indian-white relations throughout Canada's history. J.R. Miller charts the deterioration of the relationship from the initial, mutually beneficial contact in the fur trade to the current impasse in which Indians are resisting displacement and marginalization. This new edition is the result of substantial revision to incorporate current scholarship and bring the text up to date. It includes new material on the North, and reflects changes brought about by the Oka crisis, the sovereignty issue, and the various court decisions of the 1990s. It also includes new material on residential schools, treaty making, and land claims.
