Despite this, the woman does not despair but tries to establish all spheres of her life by any means, going "by the corpses". The family estate, in which the whole family lived, was sold for numerous debts. Because of this, the widowed lady is no longer taken in at the decent houses of the district. This circumstance considerably spoils the life of the pretentious lady, who is accustomed to attention, flattery, and expensive decorations. It is because of this that the main life goal of Lady Susan is to improve her financial situation. One of the possible ways leading to the realization of this idea is the successful marriage of the young daughter.Suddenly, the widow receives an invitation to stay with her deceased husband's brother. Lady Susan sees this as an interesting opportunity and immediately agrees. Having looked in advance for the young daughter of the rich lord, the mother throws away her former life and friends, and goes to a new place - to try her luck. His brother's family lives in the provinces. The attentive reader understands that the invitation to visit was purely formal, therefore relatives are not at all delighted with the newcomers. However, following the rules of good taste, the guests are received in a well-mannered and friendly way.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About Lady Susan by Jane Austen This epistolary novel, an early complete work that the author never submitted for publication, describes the schemes of the main character-the widowed Lady Susan-as she seeks a new husband for herself and one for her daughter. Although the theme, together with the focus on character study and moral issues, is close to Austen's published work (Sense and Sensibility was also originally written in the epistolary form), its outlook is very different, and the heroine has few parallels in 19th-century literature. Lady Susan is a selfish, unscrupulous and scheming woman, highly attractive to men, who tries to trap the best possible husband while maintaining a relationship with a married man. She subverts all the standards of the romantic novel: she has an active role, she is not only beautiful but intelligent and witty, and her suitors are significantly younger than she is (in contrast with Sense and Sensibility and Emma, which feature marriages by their female protagonists to men who are 16 years older). Although the ending includes a traditional reward for morality, Lady Susan herself is treated more leniently than the adulteress in Mansfield Park, who is severely punished.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Lady Susan is a brief epistolary novel that Jane Austen wrote in her youth and would be published posthumously. In Lady Susan, Austen uses the epistolary genre to build a novel where the different letters are linked as pieces of a puzzle to complete a story of small intrigues before the reader's eyes. The letters crossed by the different protagonists are describing the events that occur, but also their assessment of them, so that each character is faithfully portrayed by their actions and their ideas. Thus, reading the letters that the characters cross each other, we know how Lady Susan Vernon, a young widow, mother of a married girl, takes refuge in the house of her late husband's brother fleeing the scandal caused by her flirting with a man married. Her relatives receive Mrs. Vernon, who comes preceded by her reputation as a frivolous woman, with prevention; but Susan will try to end her misgivings and will soon be able to conquer Mr. de Courcy, her sister-in-law's brother. In addition, short of fortune, Susan wishes to marry her daughter with a wealthy petimetre that the girl hates, although she intends to hide these plans from her family, which opposes marriages of convenience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Susan Vernon is a widow who loves to manipulate and seduce men. Single, married, it's all the same to her. She has two goals--first to marry off her daughter to a man who has enough money to care for her, and second to marry someone even richer herself. The story unfolds in epistolary form, and is quite different from Jane Austen's other work. For example, Lady Susan is more than a match for any man she meets, she's not only beautiful and smart, but tends to seduce younger men--in Austen's novels, her heroines always go for older men. A very interesting change of pace, this novella was written before Sense and Sensibility. This Large Print Edition is presented in easy-to-read 16 point type.

Book excerpt: MY DEAR BROTHER,—I can no longer refuse myself the pleasure of profiting by your kind invitation when we last parted of spending some weeks with you at Churchhill, and, therefore, if quite convenient to you and Mrs. Vernon to receive me at present, I shall hope within a few days to be introduced to a sister whom I have so long desired to be acquainted with. My kind friends here are most affectionately urgent with me to prolong my stay, but their hospitable and cheerful dispositions lead them too much into society for my present situation and state of mind; and I impatiently look forward to the hour when I shall be admitted into your delightful retirement.
