Book Ladies tresses in Your Pocket

Download or read book Ladies tresses in Your Pocket written by Paul Martin Brown and published by . This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native orchids are increasingly threatened by pressure from population growth and development but, nonetheless, still present a welcome surprise to observant hikers in every state and province. Compiled and illustrated by long-time orchid specialist Paul Martin Brown, this pocket guide to ladies’-tresses is the first in a series that will cover all the wild orchids of the United States and Canada. Brown provides general distributional information, time of flowering, and habitat requirements for each species as well as a complete list of hybrids and the many different growth and color forms that can make identifying orchids so intriguing. He includes information on 26 species, 3 additional varieties, and 7 hybrids. Wild ladies’-tresses occur from British Columbia, with the hooded ladies’-tresses, Spiranthes romanzoffiana, to Florida, with Eaton’s-ladies’-tresses, S. eatonii. The species newest to science, the starry ladies’-tresses, S. stellata, is featured. Most of these species are easy to identify based upon their general appearance, range, and time of flowering. Answer three simple questions—when, where, and how does it grow? Then compare the living plant with the striking photos in these backpack-friendly laminated guides and consult the keys that Brown has created. Following these steps should enable both professional and amateur naturalists to achieve the satisfaction of identifying specific orchids in their native environment.

Book excerpt: In this historical western romance by the author of Swan Bride, a Boston firebrand and a hard-riding scout discover a passion the defies the wild frontier. In the years after the Civil War, Miss India Simms leaves the comforts of Boston to preach women’s rights throughout the Wyoming Territory. The raw town of Cheyenne is a shock to the petite aristocrat and so is her guide, Gat Ransom. His rough-hewn appearance and quick, good-natured smile embodied the contradictions of the West. But his scarred, taut power set disturbing, unfamiliar feelings pounding through India’s veins. India and Ransom ride the sweeping plains and towering forests, sharing a deep need for freedom and a sensuous promise. Only when they cast off their stubborn pride would they know the bliss of pure surrender and the fiery love that burns between them.
