Book excerpt: Laddergrams are a type of word puzzle invented by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the English author of the books, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass." The goal of a laddergram is to transform the word on the top rung into the word on the bottom rung in the least number of steps. During each step, you must replace one letter in the previous word so that a new word is formed, but without changing the positions of the other letters. For example, we can achieve the alchemist's dream of changing LEAD into GOLD in just three steps: LEAD, LOAD, GOAD, GOLD. Match wits with the Puzzlemaster on more than 100 challenging laddergrams.

Book Playing Smart

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Keyser
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2010-08-12
  • ISBN : 0813551110
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Playing Smart written by Catherine Keyser and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart women, sophisticated ladies, savvy writers . . . Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, Lois Long, Jessie Fauset, Dawn Powell, Mary McCarthy, and others imagined New York as a place where they could claim professional status, define urban independence, and shrug off confining feminine roles. It might be said that during the 1920s and 1930s these literary artists painted the town red on the pages of magazines like Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. Playing Smart, Catherine Keyser's homage to their literary genius, is a captivating celebration of their causes and careers. Through humor writing, this "smart set" expressed both sides of the story-promoting their urbanity and wit while using irony and caricature to challenge feminine stereotypes. Their fiction raised questions about what it meant to be a woman in the public eye, how gender roles would change because men and women were working together, and how the growth of the magazine industry would affect women's relationships to their bodies and minds. Keyser provides a refreshing and informative chronicle, saluting the value of being "smart" as incisive and innovative humor showed off the wit and talent of women writers and satirized the fantasy world created by magazines.

That means they need to spice up their solving with the pure puzzling pleasure of cryptic crosswords. Here, each clue offers double the dose of wordplay: to find the answer, they'll have to do a little extra deciphering--recognizing a homophone, for example, or working out a charade. Once fans try cryptics, they'll never return to regular crosswords again

Book Clinical Electrocardiography

Download or read book Clinical Electrocardiography written by B. L. Chia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the book which was first published in 1985. There has been tremendous progress in the last 10 years since the second edition, especially in the electrocardiography of acute myocardial infarction. With the advent of the thrombolytic era, many new insights into the electrocardiography of acute myocardial infarction have emerged. In this new edition, the sections on posterior myocardial infarction, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia and anti-arrhythmic drug therapy have all been updated or revised. One of the strengths of the previous two editions has been the quality of the illustrations. In keeping with this tradition, the illustrations in this third edition have been improved further, with 57 (40%) of the 142 illustrations being new. Books, monographs and scientific papers on electrocardiography abound and it would appear that there is little justification for yet another book on this subject. However, despite the voluminous publications, it is difficult to find books on electrocardiography which are simple, concise, accurate and relevant to patient care. This book is the culmination of about 30 years of experience in the teaching of electrocardiography to coronary-care-unit nurses, medical undergraduates, interns, residents and cardiology registrars. As the title of the book implies, the approach to the subject has been entirely from the viewpoint of a clinician. Hence, theoretical considerations have been kept to a mimimum and clinical-electrocardiographic correlations have been emphasized throughout the text.

Book Clinical Electrocardiography Fourth Edition

Download or read book Clinical Electrocardiography Fourth Edition written by Boon Lock Chia and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the 3rd Edition 17 years ago, progress has been truly remarkable in all areas of electrocardiography. Five of the seven chapters in this 4th Edition have been extensively revised. Out of the total of 125 ECGs, 65 are new. Each ECG is crisp and clear and all the abnormalities are highlighted by arrows for easy recognition and understanding. This book is the culmination of the author's 45 years of experience in the teaching of electrocardiography to coronary care unit nurses, medical undergraduates, postgraduates, interns, residents, senior residents and above. As the title of the book implies, the approach to the subject has been entirely from the viewpoint of a clinician. Hence, clinical-electrocardiographic correlations have been emphasized simply and succinctly throughout the text.

Book Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias

Download or read book Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias written by Zainul Abedin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate diagnosis of arrhythmias is the goal of this volume. Before the clinician can accurately classify the multiple permutations of cardiac rhythm encountered in daily practice, several essential preconditions must be met. At the most basic level, the clinician must know the diagnostic criteria for each rhythm. Without a clear understanding of these criteria, an accurate differential diagnosis is impossible, and without accurate diagnosis, correct intervention is a mere matter of chance. A second precondition of accurate rhythm diagnosis is an understanding of the mechanism of arrhythmias. Not uncommonly, two or more arrhythmic mechanisms coexist, confronting the clinician with a baffling mixture of apparently unrelated complexes and intervals. Without an understanding of the various arrhythmic mechanisms, simple and complex, the tangled skein of data can never be unraveled. Finally accurate arrhythmia diagnosis depends on skill attained through practice. The competent electrocardiographer combines the skills of precise measurement and rational application of logic with broad theoretical knowledge. The pleasure of electrocardiography is seeing through the surface appearance to the inner workings. Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias presupposes no prior knowledge of arrhythmias, and progresses from basic to the complex. The didactic sections focus extensively on the mechanism of arrhythmia, using laddergrams and other diagramatic devices to help the student visualize what is happening with the cardiac conduction system. Extensive self-assessment sections enable students to apply critical skills and test their grasp of the diagnostic criteria.

Book Advanced Concepts in Arrhythmias

Download or read book Advanced Concepts in Arrhythmias written by Henry Joseph Llewellyn Marriott and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Concepts in Arrhythmias covers all of the important and up-to-date advances in electrocardiography--reflecting all of the state-of-the-art findings that have occurred over the last few years.
