Book Not Remotely Controlled

Download or read book Not Remotely Controlled written by Lee Siegel and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television has taken firm hold of American life ever since the first flickering images replaced the disembodied voices innocently crackling from the radio. Ever present and evolving, television thrives at the crossroads of commerce, art, and entertainment. In Not Remotely Controlled cultural critic Lee Siegel collects his reportage and musings on this most hybrid medium. Whether chronicling the history of the "cop" drama, revealing the inherent irony in Donald Trump's character on "The Apprentice," or shedding light on those unheralded gems that Neilsen ratings swept away prematurely, Siegel gives each episode, series, or documentary the attention and respect usually reserved for high-art and dusty literature. Going far beyond mere pans and praise, Siegel has given long-overdue attention to America's most pervasive art form: television.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A masterpiece . . . Trouble in Mind still contains astonishing power; it could have been written yesterday.” —Vulture Ahead of its time, Trouble in Mind, written in 1955, follows the rehearsal process of an anti-lynching play preparing for its Broadway debut. When Wiletta, a Black actress and veteran of the stage, challenges the play’s stereotypical portrayal of the Black characters, unsettling biases come to the forefront and reveal the ways so-called progressive art can be used to uphold racist attitudes. Scheduled to open on Broadway in 1957, Childress objected to the requested changes in the script that would “sanitize” the play for mainstream audiences, and the production was canceled as a result. Childress’s final script is published here with an essay by playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, editor of TCG Illuminations.

Book Rewriting Literary Blackness in Harlem

Download or read book Rewriting Literary Blackness in Harlem written by Tammie Jenkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have placed the “New Negro” and Harlem’s Literati movements and their participants under the Harlem Renaissance’s umbrella with these monikers used interchangeably in scholarship to describe a seemingly singular literary and cultural moment in history. In Rewriting Literary Blackness in Harlem: The Intertextuality of Hubert Harrison, George S. Schuyler, and Wallace Thurman, Tammie Jenkins argues that these are distinct movements that share intertextually related ideological views that occurred on a literary continuum. Harrison’s, Schuyler’s, and Thurman’s contributions have rarely been viewed and analyzed through an isolation of their respective movements. Using works published by Harrison, Schuyler, and Thurman during the early twentieth century, Jenkins investigates how their works redefined blackness at the intersections of race, gender, class, and geography. This book provides new insight into the intertextual relationships between the New Negro Movement, the Harlem Renaissance and Harlem’s Literati to scholars and academic libraries interested in cultivating and expanding understandings in African American Literature, African American History, Black Studies, and African American Studies.
