Book The Fire Signals of Lachish

Download or read book The Fire Signals of Lachish written by Israel Finkelstein and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume honoring Tel Aviv University archaeologist David Ussishkin, colleagues and students representing some of the major names in the field today present 25 essays on a variety of topics of interest to the honoree. The contributions cover a range of periods from the Late Bronze Age through the Persian period and disparate subjects such as Judahite bullae, destruction levels at Megiddo, a diversity of results from various tells in Israel (and one in Jordan), Egyptian influence on Canaan, the city of Jerusalem and its temple, and much on the archaeology of the Shephelah, an area of particular interest to the honoree—who is best known for his excavations at Tell ed-Duweir, the site of biblical Lachish. The volume takes its title from a reference in one of the Lachish ostraca. From 1966 until his retirement in 2004, David Ussishkin taught in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. Between 1975 and 1978, he served as Chair of the Department, and between 1980 and 1984 as the Director of the Institute of Archaeology. In 1996, he was nominated incumbent of the Austria Chair in Archaeology of the Land of Israel in the Biblical Period. He served as the editor of Tel Aviv: The Journal of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University for 30 years.

Book Biblical Lachish

Book excerpt: Biblical Lachish was one of the most important cities in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years. It played a central historical role during the period of rule by the kings of Canaan, followed by the kings of Israel and Judah. In the second millennium BCE Lachish was a large Canaanite city-state and during the Kingdom of Judah, a fortified city, second in importance only to Jerusalem. During Sennacherib's campaign to Judah, the Assyrian army lay siege to Lachish and conquered the city in a fierce battle. The unique importance of Lachish, the extensive archaeological excavations conducted there and the finds uncovered have made Tel Lachish a key site for the study of the history of the Land of Israel in the Biblical period. This book presents a general readership with the history of Lachish in light of the excavations conducted at the site, focusing upon the excavations carried out from 1973 to 1994 under the direction of David Ussishkin.

Book The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils A Deeper Understanding of Human History The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils

Download or read book The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils A Deeper Understanding of Human History The Archaeological and Forensic Applications of Microfossils written by M. Williams and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfossils are an abundant component of the sedimentary rock record. Their analysis can reveal not only the environments in which the rocks were deposited, but also their age. When combined, the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of microfossils offer enormous utility for archaeological and forensic investigations. Their presence can act as a geological ‘fingerprint’ and the tiniest fragment of material, such as a broken Iron Age potsherd, can contain a microfossil signature that reveals the geographical source of the materials under investigation. This book explores how microfossils are employed as tools to interpret human society and habitation throughout history. Examples include microfossil evidence associated with Palaeolithic human occupation at Boxgrove in Sussex, alongside investigations into human-induced landscape change during the Holocene. Further examples include the use of microfossils to provenance the source materials of Iron Age ceramics, Roman mosaics and Minoan pottery, in addition to their application to help solve modern murder cases, highlighting the diverse applications of microfossils to improving our understanding of human history.

Download or read book The Holy Book Of El Shaddai written by Efren Gamboa and published by Book Venture Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hebrew name of God in the holy writings is El Shaddai. “El” means “God Creator” and “Shaddai” means “Almighty.” El Shaddai is the name of God. Although we read other names given to God in the Old Testament, none of those names are the true name of God. Names such as Lord, Yahweh, and Jehovah were never spoken or pronounced in Israel in the entire Old Testament as their god. Before the Kingdom of Judah fell, El Shaddai warns the Judeans that their false prophets have changed his name with Baal, which is the same name as Lord. “And it shall be at that day,” says El Shaddai, “that you shall call Me Ishi (my beloved) and shall call Me no more Baali (my lord). For I will take away the names of the Baalim (lords) gods out of their mouth and they shall no more be mentioned by their name.”

Book Piles of Slain Heaps of Corpses

Download or read book Piles of Slain Heaps of Corpses written by Jacob Onyumbe Wenyi and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piles of Slain, Heaps of Corpses reads the violence in the book of Nahum against the background of the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and tries to show how this violent book can be therapeutic and transformative for wounded communities. Here Jacob Onyumbe views Nahum through four scholarly lenses: poetic analysis, study of Assyrian iconography related to eighth- and seventh-century Judah, ethnographic research among survivors of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and modern studies on the impact of war trauma on communities of survivors. He argues that Nahum uses lyric poetry so as to evoke in seventh-century BCE Judahite audiences the memory of war and destruction at the hands of the Assyrians. The prophet uses poetry to evoke (rather than narrate) in order to bring comfort to his audience by revealing the powerful presence of God in the conditions of traumatic violence. Viewed thus, the book of Nahum cannot be dismissed (as has commonly been the case among both scholars and general readers) as irrelevant or merely vindictive. On the contrary, this book--with its depiction of a vengeful God and repulsive war scenes--is essential, especially for traumatized communities.
