Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labrador: The Country and the People The coming granary for the world's wheat supply was yesterday despised as the land of snows; to-day the subsoil of the world's best wheat land never thaws out, and the frozen valley of the Peace River is vying with the corn lands of the Pharaohs. To us here, away out of the world's hum and bustle, it seems only a question of time. Some day a railway will come to export our stores of mineral wealth, to tap our sources of more than Niagaran power, to bring visitors to scenery of Norwegian quality yet made peculiarly attractive by the entrancing colour plays of Arctic auroras over the fantastic architecture of mountains the like of which can seldom be matched on the earth. Surely it will come to pass that one day another Atlantic City will rise amidst these unexplored but invigorating wilds to lure men and women tired of heat and exhausted by the nerve stress of overcrowded centres. It has seemed appropriate, in this belief, to try to collate available information in the form of a book that should bring within easy reach of the public the facts that are of interest concerning Labrador. It is hoped, also, that such a book will act as an incentive to others to come and pursue still further the studies and explora tions herein described. With these objects in view I sought the help of friends skilled in the various branches of science, as it can now declare the meaning of Labrador, the land and the people. Dr. Reginald A. Download or read book Through the Northern Looking Glass written by Lorelei A. Lambert and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Northern Native Women survive in spite of the harshness of their lives in the boreal forest and tundra. [They] care for and deliver newborn infants far from cities, clinics, hospitals, malls, and pharmacies...Throughout history, women have healed one another. Among Native Peoples, oral histories and traditional storytelling have always been essential to cultural survival. In this book, thirteen Northern Native women relate their experiences as survivors of breast cancer. They speak about how they adapted to the disease, and look in particular at the ties they have built with family, friends, and their environment. The book also examines the clashing and blending of medical technology with traditional Native healing methods. An unusual and unique book.

Book Comparative International Perspectives on Education and Social Change in Developing Countries and Indigenous Peoples in Developed Countries

Download or read book Comparative International Perspectives on Education and Social Change in Developing Countries and Indigenous Peoples in Developed Countries written by Gaëtane Jean-Marie and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratizing educational access and building capacity in developing countries and amongst indigenous peoples in developed countries may be elusive but are hopeful goals. Many developing countries are striving to reengineer their incoherent education systems at a time when they are most vulnerable, particularly with susceptibility to natural disasters, political unrests, and economic instabilities (UNESCO, 2007). Similarly, indigenous peoples in developed countries are seeking more control over education as they consider the long?term effects of educational policies that have been forced on them. Research on education and social change in developing countries has a long history (Glewwe, 2002; Hanushek, 1995; Sider, 2011). However, there is limited research on educational capacity?building in developing countries such as Kenya, Honduras, Haiti, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Peru, China, and Thailand. Further, the educational frameworks by which Indigenous peoples (M?ori, Canada’s First Nations, and American Indian/Alaska Natives) have been educated have some significant similarities to those encountered in developing countries. The compilation of chapters illuminates research and collaborative initiatives between the authors and local leaders in developing countries’ and Indigenous peoples in developed countries’ efforts to solve the complexity of social inequities through educational access and quality learning. The authors draw on theoretical lens, knowledge bases, and strategies, and identify trends and developments to provide the scope of educational improvement in a globalization context (Brooks & Normore, 2010; Jean?Marie, Normore & Brooks, 2009).
