Download or read book Labour and the Wage written by Zoe Adams and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour and the Wage: A Critical Perspective offers a new perspective on why labour law struggles to respond to problems such as low pay and under-inclusive employment. A Marxian-inspired ontological approach sheds new light on the role of labour law in a capitalist economy and on the limitations and potential of labour law when it comes to bringing about social change. It illustrates this through the lens of the wage. The book develops a legal genealogy that explores the shifting portfolio of concepts through which the wage has been conceptualized in legal discourse as capitalism has developed. This exploration spans from the Norman Conquest to the present day, and covers diverse issues such as the decasualization of the docks, sweated labour, the truck system, tax-credits, tips, and minimum wages. Labour and the Wage provides one of the most in-depth and comprehensive analyses of the wage to date, while, at the same time, shedding new light on the contradictory role, or function, of labour law in the context of capitalism.

Book United States Code

    Book Details:
  • Author : United States
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1506 pages

Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book Blue Labour

  • Author : Maurice Glasman
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2022-08-15
  • ISBN : 1509528881
  • Pages : 103 pages

Download or read book Blue Labour written by Maurice Glasman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour has been on a wild ride over the past thirty years. New Labour argued that we had no choice but to accept a globalized free market economy in which the race was to the swift, the open and the flexible. Corbynism reacted against this with a jumble of old school statism and identity politics. Both ultimately failed. In this book, Maurice Glasman takes the axe to the soulless utilitarianism and ‘progressive’ intolerance of both Blair and Corbyn. Human beings, he contends, are not calculating machines, but faithful, relational beings who yearn for meaning and belonging. Rooted in their homes, families and traditions, they seek to resist the revolutionary upheaval of markets and states, which try to commodify and dominate their lives and homes, by the practice of democracy, mutuality and pluralism. This is the true Labour tradition, which is paradoxically both radical and conservative – and more relevant than ever in a post-COVID world. This crisp statement of the real politics of Blue Labour – rather than the absurd caricature of its detractors – is Glasman’s love letter to the left-conservatism that provides Labour’s best chance of moral – and indeed electoral – redemption.

Book Child Labour

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anaclaudia Gastal Fassa
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-07
  • ISBN : 0199558582
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Child Labour written by Anaclaudia Gastal Fassa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child labour constitutes a major public health concern, with estimates that world-wide 110 million children aged 5-14 years are engaged in labour that can be described as hazardous or intolerable. This book examines both the rights oriented and public health perspectives on child labour. A rights approach ensures that exploitative and abusive work is considered not just in terms of a labour market or health rights approach, but also in terms of human dignity and the solutions that preserve the rights of children and communities. The public health approach is steeped in the relationship between individuals and their community, seeking to identify how the presence (or absence) of government programmes and policies affects those involved. The economics perspective is also presented early in the book, to aid understanding of the causes and consequences of child labour, before the alternate public health and sociological views are presented. The editors examine factors such as poverty, malnutrition, social disadvantage, gender, globalisation, and education, and look at both physical and psychological threats. This book will be of use to academics and students involved in health, health policy, social sciences and development disciplines. Those actively involved public health initiatives, such as policy makers, and non-governmental organisations, will also find this an invaluable resource.

Book Labour in British Society 1830 1914

Download or read book Labour in British Society 1830 1914 written by Donald M. MacRaild and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2000 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book present a critical narrative of labour's place in the process of industrialisation between about 1830 and the outbreak of the Great War." "At the outset of this crucial period, it was evident to most observers that the labour market and the wider economy had been transformed by what became known as the Industrial Revolution. Pervasive changes continued until 1914 (an appropriate date at which to conclude, as it marks the impact of a war that caused the biggest shift in the demand for labour since the Black Death). In assessing these processes, however, MacRaild and Martin make clear that most workers were not employed in manufacturing; indeed, the variegated nature of the labour market and the differing pace of change in different sectors of the economy are the book's key themes. There is also discussion of broader aspects of working-class culture, as well as politics and protest." "MacRaild and Martin provide a clear, thematic guide through this complex area of economic and social history, while the critical bibliography offers an introduction to the wider literature."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
