Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In presenting this manual of laboratory exercises in physical chemistry, the authors have been prompted by a threefold object: first, to facilitate the task of the instructor in handling large classes of students beginning a course of practical physical chemistry; second, to assist the student in recording his observations in a clear and comprehensive manner; and third, to present such quantitative exercises as will be particularly desirable in the training of students of engineering. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Physical Chemistry In organising the practical work in connection with a class of Physical Chemistry (1) a teacher may himself carry out the measurements while the whole class look on, or (2) he may divide the class into sets of two or more and assign one experiment to each set, or (3) he may adopt the "one student one experiment" plan. Of these three methods, the third is undoubtedly the best, because a student is made responsible for an experiment in a way that can never be when another is associated with him in the work. In the second method the tendency is for one student of a set to lead while the others make no attempt at initiative and lose the best part of the training obtainable in a laboratory. Close supervision is, of course, essential when valuable instruments are being handled, and frequently the teaching staff is too small for the demonstrating to be efficient according to the third plan, so that the second is adopted, which, however, is much to be preferred to the first. The time available for Practical Physical Chemistry is usually very meagre, and has an important bearing on the organisation of Laboratory Work. The best system would be one in which the question of time had never to be considered. As things are, however, a student, as a rule, can afford out of his day's work only one period of two to three hours for Practical Physical Chemistry. It is important, therefore, that the exercises should be such that they can be finished in one period not extending beyond the limits mentioned. With the wish to prepare a manual which may be placed in the hands of the student of physical chemistry, the author has written this book. He would state at the outset that he in no way considers this as an effort to rival either of the above books, which for long must remain the standard works of reference on physico-chemical measurements. The effort has been made to select only such exercises as are typical, and where several different methods exist for the measurement of the same quantity, only in rare instances has more than one been given. In a word, the book has been made as condensed as possible in order not to discourage the student with too many methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Biological Chemistry: With Supplement Equivalent and Normal Solutions. - Since the molecular weight of sodium hydroxid (NaOH) is 40 and that of hydrochloric acid (HCl) is 36.46, it follows that 40 g. of the former contain the same number of molecules as 36.46 g. of the latter. If 40 g. of sodium hydroxid and 36.46 g. of hydrochloric acid are each dissolved in pure water sufficient to make one liter of solution, each liter will contain the same number of dissolved molecules. It will take a little less than one liter of water to make a liter of solution because the dissolved substance takes up some space. A normal sodium hydroxid solution contains four per cent, of sodium hydroxid. By per cent, in the case of solutions is usually meant the amount of substance present in 100 c.c. of solution. Mixing equal volumes of two such solutions is, therefore, the same as bringing together practically the same number of the two kinds of molecules, and the result is the instantaneous and essentially complete transformation into sodium chlorid (and water). X NaOH + X HC1 = X NaQ + X H2O If either or both of the solutions should first be diluted with a considerable bulk of pure water, the result on mixing the two would be the same, for the extra amount of water present takes no part in the reaction (except to the extent of absorbing a part of the heat set free).
