Book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book South Africa Into The 1980s

Download or read book South Africa Into The 1980s written by Richard E Bissell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of South Africa's future has become a paramount issue in global politics. This book examines the position of South Africa as it faces the 1980s—its strengths, its weaknesses, and the probable influences of other states on South Africa in the years to come. The authors share a common interest in an analytical approach to a topic often argued with more emotion than rationality. They discuss South Africa's internal situation, with particular emphasis on the interests and aspirations of the political parties competing for power; then they focus on external realities, looking at the country's ability to project influence abroad as well as the power of others to affect events within it. In sum, they highlight crucial trends shaping South Africa's current and future development.

Book The Decline of the South African Economy

Download or read book The Decline of the South African Economy written by Stuart Jones and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa's leading economists adopt within this volume a sectoral approach in their analysis of the drastic changes that have occurred within the South African economy since 1970. The book illustrates how, despite its sophisticated infrastructure, the South African economy has shared in the economic decline - resulting from misguided economic policies - that has been the experience of Sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors argue that the failure of manufacturing to maintain the country's economic growth, once the output of the gold mines began to decline, is central to an understanding of events and outcomes in the economy. Government policy towards manufacturing has played a major part in the decline of the South African economy, but this has, however, tended to be overlooked as a result of the turbulence generated by the political events unfolding in South Africa.

Book A Post Apartheid Southern Africa

Download or read book A Post Apartheid Southern Africa written by Pierre Beaudet and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-12-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book takes a hard look at internal developments and class formation in the region and explores the complex dynamics underlying the 'failure' of socialist transformation, demystifying the highly-simplified 'destabilisation' thesis and pointing to some of the problems that forces for change in South Africa itself may have to face in the 1990s. The chapters make significant reference to changing present and future relations with South Africa, and to the impact of internal changes on the development of neighbouring countries.

Book Labour and the left in the 1980s

Download or read book Labour and the left in the 1980s written by Jonathan Davis and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays constitutes the first history of Labour and left-wing politics in the decade when Margaret Thatcher reshaped modern Britain. Leading scholars explore aspects of left-wing culture, activities and ideas at a time when social democracy was in crisis. There are articles about political leadership, economic alternatives, gay rights, the miners’ strike, the Militant Tendency and the politics of race. The book also situates the crisis of the left in international terms as the socialist world began to collapse. Tony Blair's New Labour disavowed the 1980s left, associating it with failure, but this volume argues for a more complex approach. Many of the causes it championed are now mainstream, suggesting that the time has come to reassess 1980s progressive politics, despite its undeniable electoral failures. With this in mind, the contributors offer ground-breaking research and penetrating arguments about the strange death of Labour Britain.

Book The Black Theatre Movement in the United States and in South Africa

Download or read book The Black Theatre Movement in the United States and in South Africa written by Olga Barrios and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2008 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
