Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After sustained economic growth in Colombia over two decades, the labor market in Bogota exhibited considerable tightening up in the late 1970s. Unemployment rates were seen to have declined and the rate of participation of women to have increased perceptibly over the decade. This study uses data from a 1978 household survey to examine the determinants of labor force participation. The estimates show that the main component of the labor force that can be expected to expand rapidly with rising real wages is that of married women. As access to secondary and higher education improves further, more young men and women will stay longer in school before entering the labor force. Hence, fewer young men and women will enter the labor force at a young age. The same forces that induce greater participation of married women will serve to reduce the entry of young women into the labor force at a young age. These results have implications for urban labor markets in developing countries in general. It may be the case that the remarkable increase in female labor participation that has taken place in developed countries may occur in developing countries earlier than might be expected at rather lower absolute income levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book cuts through the powerful mythology surrounding Los Angeles to reveal the causes of inequality in a city that has weathered rapid population change, economic restructuring, and fractious ethnic relations. The sources of disadvantage and the means of getting ahead differ greatly among the city's myriad ethnic groups. The demand for unskilled labor is stronger here than in other cities, allowing Los Angeles's large population of immigrant workers with little education to find work in light manufacturing and low-paid service jobs. A less beneficial result of this trend is the increased marginalization of the city's low-skilled black workers, who do not enjoy the extended ethnic networks of many of the new immigrant groups and who must contend with persistent negative racial stereotypes. Patterns of residential segregation are also more diffuse in Los Angeles, with many once-black neighborhoods now split evenly between blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and other minorities. Inequality in Los Angeles cannot be reduced to a simple black-white divide. Nonetheless, in this thoroughly multicultural city, race remains a crucial factor shaping economic fortunes. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States stands out among advanced economies with marked declines in labor force participation. National averages furthermore conceal considerable within-country heterogeneity. This paper explores regional differences to shed light on drivers of participation rates at the state and metropolitan area levels. It documents a broad-based decline, especially pronounced outside metropolitan areas. Using novel measures of local vulnerability to trade and technology it finds that metropolitan areas with higher exposures to routinization and offshoring experienced larger drops in participation in 2000-2016. Thus, areas with different occupational mixes can experience divergent labor market trajectories as a result of trade and technology.

Download or read book Sources of Metropolitan Growth written by John F. McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors that determine growth at the industry level are different for innovative versus mature industries. Growth industries rely on high-quality workers, access to capital, technical change, and numerous forms of collected economies. Mature industries concentrate on low-input costs and minimizing costs for wages, transportation, taxes, material, etc. This approach is adopted here to consider the growth and development of metropolitan economies. In twelve chapters, eminent scholars provide a complete review of what works - and what doesn't - in generating economic development. What are the potential and the reality of producer services, suburban business centers, enterprise zones, technology-based ventures, and industrial incubators? How can economic development policy improve the incubator effect? Is there a nationwide venture capital network? What are the locational requirements of firms in high-growth industries? Finally, what are the consequences of failed growth? This comprehensive collection includes chapters by Edwin S. Mills; Patricia E. Beeson; Mark A. Satterthwaite; Breandán Ó Huallacháin; John F. McDonald; William B. Beyers; Truman A. Hartshorn; Peter O. Muller; Rodney A. Erickson; Richard Florida; Donald F. Smith, Jr.; Claudia Bird Schoonhoven; Kathleen M. Eisenhardt; Stephen Nord; Robert G.
