Download or read book Peoples of the Lake Nyasa Region written by Mary Tew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1950, discusses the tribes around Lake Nyasa. The rationale for treating the tribes here as members of a single ethnographic province is that the region whose literature has been surveyed is vast, and the ethnic distinctions between its inhabitants have been confused by raids and migrations over centuries.

Book The Politics of Translating Sound Motifs in African Fiction

Download or read book The Politics of Translating Sound Motifs in African Fiction written by Laurence Jay-Rayon Ibrahim Aibo and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with the premise that aesthetic choices reveal the ideological stances of translators, the author of this research monograph examines works of fiction by postcolonial African authors writing in English or French, the genesis and reception of their works, and the translation of each one into French or English. Texts include those by Nuruddin Farah from Somalia, Abdourahman Ali Waberi from Djibouti, Jean-Marie Adiaffi from Côte d’Ivoire, Ayi Kwei Armah from Ghana, Chenjerai Hove from Zimbabwe, and Assia Djebar from Algeria, and their translations by Jacqueline Bardolph, Jeanne Garane, Brigitte Katiyo, Jean-Pierre Richard, Josette and Robert Mane, and Dorothy Blair. The author highlights the aural poetics of these works, explores the sound motifs underlying their literary power, and shows how each is articulated with the writer’s literary heritage. She then embarks on a close examination of each translator’s background, followed by a rich analysis of their treatments of sound. The translators’ strategies for addressing sound motifs are contextualized in the larger framework of postcolonial literatures and changing reading materialities.

Book African Philosophy for the Twenty First Century

Download or read book African Philosophy for the Twenty First Century written by Jean Godefroy Bidima and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, the twenty-first century began with new challenges surrounding and regarding philosophical discourses. Questions of economic and political liberation, the displacement of populations and the process of urbanization present ongoing challenges, linked to problems such as endemic diseases and famine, the restructure of the traditional family, gender and the position of women, the transmission of culture from past to future generations. Changes in labor relations resulting from introduction of financial speculation, cutting edge technologies, and differential access to digital and older cultural forms have placed real demands on Africans and Africanists working in philosophy. This volume explores the ways in which African philosophies express “transitional acts,” those acts by which thought interacts with history as it is being made and by which it assures its own renewal in proposing provisional solutions to historical problems. A transitional act combines both the audacity of confrontation and the novelty of creation, prudence in the face of risks and anticipation in the face of the unexpected. Influential and emerging thinkers from both sides of the Atlantic consider this dual activity in the realm of criticism and imagination, public spaces in Africa, and the relationship between historical politics and historical poetics.
