While his role in establishing Trinitarian terminology, as well as his function in shaping monasticism, his social thought and even his contribution to the evolution of liturgical forms have been the focus of research for many years, there are few studies which centre on his political thought. Basil played a major role in the political and religious life between Cappadocia and Armenia and was a key figure in the tumultuous relationship between Church and State in Late Antiquity. He was a great religious leader and a gifted diplomat, and developed a ’special relationship’ with Emperor Valens and other high imperial officials.

In this new biographical study, however, controversy is no longer seen as the central preoccupation of his life nor are his ascetic initiatives viewed as separable from his pastoral concern for all Christians. Basil's letters, sermons, and theological treatises, together with the testimonies of his relatives and friends, reveal a man beset by doubt. He demanded loyalty, but gave it also, and made it a central feature of his church. In Rousseau's portrait, Basil's understanding of human nature emerges as his major legacy.

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book excerpt: The series seeks to contribute to the understanding of the variation and transmission of the New Testament by analyzing quotations of and allusions to passages of it in the work of Christian writers of Late Antiquity, many of which can be more precisely located both temporally and geographically than the earliest New Testament manuscripts. Racine (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) finds Basil (ca. 330-379) a valuable witness in that regard because he quotes abundantly and at length, apparently coping from a written text. A similar study has been conducted on his brother, Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394), so the combination adds much to the knowledge of the New Testament text in use in Cappadocia during the fourth century. The study is slightly revised from his October 2000 Ph. D. dissertation for the University of St. Michael's College. Distributed by Aspen. Book excerpt: THE Letters of St. Basil fittingly continue the series of Patristic writings in the Loeb Classical Library which has already published some of the works of Clement of Alexandria, St. Augustine and the Apostolic Fathers. Apart from their historical significance, these Letters are interesting as expressions of a striking personality. There is so much in the man himself and so rich a variety in his experience, that even in an age remarkable for men of force and character he is an outstanding figure. Withdrawn for a time from contact with worldly affairs, he is again in the very midst of them as bishop and theologian. With a viligant eye to the spiritual needs of his own diocese, he is none the less deeply concerned for the preservation of the Faith against the attack, open or insidious, of Arianism. Here and there in the Letters he gives us descriptions that are exquisite. Occasionally, in extolling the beauty of Christian virtue, he becomes eloquent. And when duty compels him to upbraid those in high places, episcopal or imperial, he is outspoken and fearless.
