A queste fiabe Collodi ne aggiunse altre delle maggiori favoleggiatrici francesi del XVII-XVIII secolo: Madame d'Aulnoy e Madame Le Prince de Beaumont. Egli però non si limitò a tradurre: colorì e vivificò il linguaggio un po' ingessato degli originali, aggiungendo elementi di arguzia toscana e di spontaneità popolaresca.
