The contributions are in English or Italian. Aspasius’ commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics is the earliest ancient commentary on Aristotle of which extensive parts survive in their original form. It is important both for the history of commentary as a genre and for the history of philosophical thought in the first two centuries A.D.; it is also still valuable as what its author intended it to be, an aid in interpreting the Ethics. All three aspects are explored by the essays. The book is not formally a commentary on Aspasius’ commentary; but between them the essays consider the interpretation of numerous problematic or significant passages. Full indices will enable readers quickly to locate discussion of particular parts of Aspasius’ work. This volume of essays will form a natural complement to the first ever translation of Aspasius’ commentary into any modern language, currently in preparation by Paul Mercken.

His contributions to the field of papyrology are well known: he has continually stressed the importance of Egyptian sources for the study of Greek and Roman Egypt, and the importance of studying the Greek and Egyptian documentation together, in context. Indeed, he has been among the first to link the formerly separate Greek and Egyptian documentation, establishing modern papyrological practice. He has thus given an Egyptian face to Graeco-Roman society, to complement the Greek face that had previously dominated papyrology. Book excerpt: The present book is intended to represent the first volume of a long series, which will be devoted to collect studies, proceedings, and papers in the field of Humanities. The title “Mantua Humanistic Studies” reminds us to a historical town in northern Italy, Mantua, that had been for a long time the capital of one of the most powerful and culturally influencing dynasties of the Renaissance: the Gonzaga family. Mantua has an extraordinary richness in terms of history, arts, and tradition of studies, and is now one of the main Unesco Heritage sites. Among the artists who have left their masterworks in the city, we can find Pisanello, Andrea Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti, Giulio Romano, Rubens, Titian, and many others. Even if in the time of the Gonzagas the city had a strong history of humanistic studies, mainly established by the great teacher Vittorino Da Feltre, during the following centuries Mantua gradually lost great part of its cultural influence, especially after the end of the leading dynasty at the beginning of the 18th Century. Maybe the only real exception was the renowned “Accademia Nazionale Virgiliana”. Nevertheless, in very recent years some Italian Academic Institutions and Universities have rediscovered the cultural importance of the town, and they moved here with some of their Bachelor and Master degrees: the Politecnico of Milano, the University of Verona and, in 2018, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. More and more students are moving into our old city every year, and the future could really be bright in the terms of culture, teaching, and research. “Mantua Humanistic Studies” would like to be a small – but maybe not useless – contribution to what could be a “second Renaissance” for the capital of the Gonzagas, offered by a small but active Scientific Publishing House which was born and still operates in this small but incredible town.

Yet few of us who work in the field have stopped long enough to ask where this myth originated. Did the poet observe a case of liver regeneration in a human being? Was it brilliant intuition or perhaps, literally, just a 'gut feeling' of a poet looking for good rhymes that led to the prediction that livers grow when part of the tissueisremoved? Thisbookdoesnotattemptto solve these historical issues. Itdoes, instead, cover in detail some of the major modem themes of research on liver regen eration, injury and repair. As indicated in Dr. N. Bucher's chapter, the modem phase ofexperimental studies on liver regeneration started in 1931 with the publication by Higgins and Anderson of a method to perform a two-thirds resection of the liver of a rat. The technique described has 3 remarkable features: 1) it is highly reproducible, resulting in the removal of 68% of the liver, 2) it has minimal if any mortality, and 3) it consists only of blood vessel ligation and does not involve cutting through or wounding hepatic tissue.
