Book excerpt: After 40 years of professional experience developed in three areas of work —City-Territory, Landscape-Public Space and Building—, Batlle i Roig acquires a new commitment and positions itself in the face of the climate emergency, generating a sustainability matrix through which to contextualize your urban projects and urban strategies. At Batlleiroig we have been talking about Landscape and Nature since our foundation in 1981. We are committed to the environment and involved in finding solutions to solve the climate emergency. The motto “Merging City and Nature” serves to bring together our improvement commitments in each of the actions we carry out. We work in three different disciplines: Urbanism, Landscaping and Architecture, trying to be very specialists in each of them but from the essential transversality that is required to develop any intervention. The climate emergency becomes today our main transversality, the one that should guide our actions.

Book The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle

Download or read book The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle written by Francesco de Ceglia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Naples’s patron saint, Gennaro, the history of his blood relic, and the mystery of its periodical liquefaction. Three times a year, Neapolitans gather to witness the recurring phenomenon of the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood. From the seventeenth century to the present, crowds have prayed to the city’s patron for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts, and the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. In the “miraculous” moment of transposition from solid to liquid, the faithful seek respite from the ills of the world in the saintly blood, a visual reminder of the blood of Christ spilled for their salvation. In Naples, the periodical liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood is not officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church, which now more cautiously refers to it as a prodigy. Nevertheless, for centuries, this phenomenon has been called “a miracle” in liturgical texts approved by the ecclesiastical authority and in the words of bishops, cardinals, popes, and saints. However, not everyone agreed. This volume follows the efforts of theologians, alchemists, charlatans, and scientists who, through the centuries, have tried to answer questions such as: Is the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood really a miracle? If not, how is it possible to explain a phenomenon that occurs only on dates liturgically relevant to the saint? The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle will be of great value to those interested in Religious Studies, Italian Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, as well as the History of Science, Anthropology, and Ethnography.

Book Natural Materials of the Holy Land and the Visual Translation of Place 500 1500

Download or read book Natural Materials of the Holy Land and the Visual Translation of Place 500 1500 written by Renana Bartal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Materials of the Holy Land and the Visual Translation of Place, 500-1500, focuses on the unique ways that natural materials carry the spirit of place. Since early Christianity, wood, earth, water and stone were taken from loca sancta to signify them elsewhere. Academic discourse has indiscriminately grouped material tokens from holy places and their containers with architectural and topographical emulations, two-dimensional images and bodily relics. However, unlike textual or visual representations, natural materials do not describe or interpret the Holy Land; they are part of it. Tangible and timeless, they realize the meaning of their place of origin in new locations. What makes earth, stones or bottled water transported from holy sites sacred? How do they become pars pro toto, signifying the whole from which they were taken? This book will examine natural media used for translating loca sancta, the processes of their sanctification and how, although inherently abstract, they become charged with meaning. It will address their metamorphosis, natural or induced; how they change the environment to which they are transported; their capacity to translate a static and distant site elsewhere; the effect of their relocation on users/viewers; and how their containers and staging are used to communicate their substance.

Book Nature and Imagination in Ancient and Early Modern Roman Art

Download or read book Nature and Imagination in Ancient and Early Modern Roman Art written by Gabriel Pihas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-27 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume uses the art of Rome to help us understand the radical historical break between the fundamental ancient pre-supposition that there is a natural world or cosmos situating human life, and the equally fundamental modern emphasis on human imagination and its creative power. Rome’s unique art history reveals a different side of the battle between ancients and moderns than that usually raised as an issue in the history of science and philosophy. The book traces the idea of a cosmos in pre-modern art in Rome, from the reception of Greek art in the Roman republic to the construction of the Pantheon, to early Christian art and architecture. It then sketches the disappearance of the presupposition of a cosmos in the High Renaissance and Baroque periods, as creativity became a new ideal. Through discussions of the art and architecture that defines proto-modern Rome— from Michelangelo’s terribilita’ in the Sistine Chapel, Caravaggio’s realism, Baroque illusionism, the infinities of Borromini’s architecture, to the Grand Tour’s representations of ruins— through an interpretation of such major issues and works, this book shows how modern art liberates us while leaving us feeling estranged from our grounding in the natural world. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, architectural history, classics, philosophy, and early modern history and culture.
