Book The Dark Side of Church State Separation

Download or read book The Dark Side of Church State Separation written by Stephen Strehle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Side of Church/State Separation analyzes the Enlightenment's attack upon the Judeo-Christian tradition and its impact upon the development of secular regimes in France, Germany, and Russia. Such regimes followed the anti-Semitic/anti-Christian agenda of the French Enlightenment in blaming the Judeo-Christian tradition for all the ills of European society and believing that human beings can develop their own set of values and purposes through rational means, apart from any revelation from God or Scripture. Stephen Strehle's analysis extends our understanding of church/state relations and its history. He confirms the spiritual roots of modern anti-Semitism within the ideology of the Enlightenment and recognizes the intimate relationship between anti-Semitism and anti-Christianity. Strehle questions the absolute doctrine of church/state separation, given its background in the bigotries of the philosophes. He notes the nefarious motives of subsequent regimes, which used the French doctrine to replace the religious community with the state and its secular ideology. This detailed historical analysis of original sources and secondary literature is woven together with special appreciation for the philosophical and theological ideas that contributed to the emergence of political institutions. Readers will gain an understanding of the most influential ideas shaping the modern world and present-day culture.

Book Once We Were Sisters

Download or read book Once We Were Sisters written by Sheila Kohler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE’S BEST NEW BOOKS “A searing and intimate memoir about love turned deadly.” —The BBC “An intimate illumination of sisterhood and loss.” —People When Sheila Kohler was thirty-seven, she received the heart-stopping news that her sister Maxine, only two years older, was killed when her husband drove them off a deserted road in Johannesburg. Stunned by the news, she immediately flew back to the country where she was born, determined to find answers and forced to reckon with his history of violence and the lingering effects of their most unusual childhood—one marked by death and the misguided love of their mother. In her signature spare and incisive prose, Sheila Kohler recounts the lives she and her sister led. Flashing back to their storybook childhood at the family estate, Crossways, Kohler tells of the death of her father when she and Maxine were girls, which led to the family abandoning their house and the girls being raised by their mother, at turns distant and suffocating. We follow them to the cloistered Anglican boarding school where they first learn of separation and later their studies in Rome and Paris where they plan grand lives for themselves—lives that are interrupted when both marry young and discover they have made poor choices. Kohler evokes the bond between sisters and shows how that bond changes but never breaks, even after death. “A beautiful and disturbing memoir of a beloved sister who died at the age of thirty-nine in circumstances that strongly suggest murder. . . . Highly recommended.” —Joyce Carol Oates

  • Pages : 81 pages

Download or read book Separation Anxiety written by Gavin Bradley and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This poignant debut by Gavin Bradley explores the emotional toll of different kinds of separation: from a partner, a previously held sense of self, or a home and the people left behind. The main narrative describes the deterioration of a long-term relationship, interweaving poems dealing with the loneliness of immigration and the anxiety of separation from Northern Ireland, the poet’s homeland. These personal poems enter their stories through a variety of characters and places, from dock builders to dogs, from shorelines to volcanoes, to “mouths soft and humming like beehives.” Other sections of the collection examine a post-Troubles’ experience in Northern Ireland (evoking the lived-experience of growing up with bombs and domineering Catholicism), tell grandfather stories, and show a lasting love for the people, the language, and the land. Separation Anxiety ultimately conveys a message of hope, reminding us that “we’ll be remembered for / ourselves, and not the spaces we / leave behind.”

Book Theoretical Advancement in Chromatography and Related Separation Techniques

Download or read book Theoretical Advancement in Chromatography and Related Separation Techniques written by Francesco Dondi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromatography and all the related separation techniques are experimental in their origin and justification. However, the spectacular progress made in this area since World War II has given rise to a theoretical underpinning. The present book covers the current status of the research area and places it in perspective with the general concepts of the fields of physical chemistry involved. The ASI lectures/authors -- well known leaders in their fields -- have written presentations at the graduate level, accessible to all those who have a good general background in the thermodynamics and mass transfer theory of phase equilibria. The book will be useful to young scientists and engineers who wish to access the current frontiers in chromatography and other separation sciences.
