Book excerpt: Une des avancées majeures de ces dernières décennies dans le champ de l'économie de l'innovation et du changement technique porte sur l'affirmation et la conceptualisation du gradualisme du phénomène innovateur (Rosenberg, 1978). Cette caractéristique implique le dépassement de la séparation du processus d'innovation en trois phases distinctes (invention, innovation, diffusion) issue de la pensée shumpéterienne. Une critique centrale de ce triptyque porte sur le fait que l'innovation radicale ne peut se diffuser dans le système productif sans innovations incrémentaI es complémentaires, qui se réalisent au cours même de sa diffusion (Deware et Dutoton, 1986). Elles permettent et conditionnent l'insertion de l'innovation dans le système technique existant, en maintenant sa cohérence technicoéconomique (Gilles, 1978). Or ces innovations, pour mineures qu'elles soient d'un point de vue scientifique ou technologique, s'avèrent déterminantes en matière d'impact économique et de progrès technique (Rosenberg, 1982). L 'histoire économique des innovations radicales de la seconde révolution industrielle montre à cet égard- que, dans leur phase d'émergence industrielle, leur performance était en général inférieure aux technologies installées (Bright, 1949). Notre problématique de l'utilisateur comme innovateur relève du champ de recherche de la diffusion de l'innovation, en partageant l'une de ses problématiques majeures: le processus de diffusion comme partie intégrante du processus d'innovation. L'objet technique non seulement se modifie au cours de sa diffusion, mais plus encore, il s'y constitue (Sahal 1981). La distinction entre innovation et diffusion se trouve ainsi en bonne partie caduque. L'émergence et l'évolution des Nouvelles Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication (NTIC) nous en fournissent une illustration puissante.

Elles accompagnent nos représentations, les amplifient. « Miroir, amplificateur, accélérateur », autant de termes qui désignent les effets des nouvelles technologies mais nous renvoient à nos responsabilités de citoyen, d’homme avant celles d’internaute. Le rêve numérique renvoie à la société que nous voulons vraiment imaginer, construire. On perçoit l’actualité et la nécessité de cette réflexion approfondie sur l’imaginaire et la représentation des NTIC dans une société où l’innovation technologique est avancée en permanence comme une réponse aux problèmes de société sur lesquels bute l’action politique.

Book excerpt: In The Origins of Comics: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCay, Thierry Smolderen presents a cultural landscape whose narrative differs in many ways from those presented by other historians of the comic strip. Rather than beginning his inquiry with the popularly accepted "sequential art" definition of the comic strip, Smolderen instead wishes to engage with the historical dimensions that inform that definition. His goal is to understand the processes that led to the twentieth-century comic strip, the highly recognizable species of picture stories that he sees crystallizing around 1900 in the United States. Featuring close readings of the picture stories, caricatures, and humoristic illustrations of William Hogarth, Rodolphe Töpffer, Gustave Doré, and their many contemporaries, Smolderen establishes how these artists were immersed in a very old visual culture in which images—satirical images in particular—were deciphered in a way that was often described as hieroglyphical. Across eight chapters, he acutely points out how the effect of the printing press and the mass advent of audiovisual technologies (photography, audio recording, and cinema) at the end of the nineteenth century led to a new twentieth-century visual culture. In tracing this evolution, Smolderen distinguishes himself from other comics historians by following a methodology that explains the present state of the form of comics on the basis of its history, rather than presenting the history of the form on the basis of its present state. This study remaps the history of this influential art form.
