Aunque hemos trabajado durante muchos años en problemas centrales de derecho penal, nuestra trayectoria académica se nutre de diferentes influencias y ha sido guiada por distintos objetivos. Así, en nuestros respectivos ámbitos de interés se conjugan las preocupaciones por el análisis de los sistemas normativos, la teoría del delito o la plausibilidad de doctrinas morales que inciden en la atribución de responsabilidad. Esta diversidad de perspectivas e intereses ha sido una importante fuente de riqueza conceptual, pero también un límite al desarrollo de argumentos en los que no hemos logrado el suficiente consenso. Más aún: la necesidad de generar acuerdos que permitiesen avanzar en nuestro plan de trabajo determinó, en alguna medida, la elaboración de compromisos que, tal vez, en otras obras individuales no se producen.

The book surveys how Christian messages were rendered in indigenous languages; explores what was added, transformed, or glossed over; and ends with an epilogue about contemporary Nahuatl Christianities. In eleven case studies drawn from eight Amerindian languages—Nahuatl, Northern and Valley Zapotec, Quechua, Yucatec Maya, K'iche' Maya, Q'eqchi' Maya, and Tupi—the authors address Christian texts and traditions that were repeatedly changed through translation—a process of “turning around” as conveyed in Classical Nahuatl. La aplicación de la ley penal sigue siendo una labor dogmática, pero que no solamente aporta una seguridad jurídica resultante de la correcta aplicación de las categorías del concepto de delito, sino que, además, está en condiciones de mostrar precisamente que esa solución goza de legitimación social. De este modo estamos ante una dogmática penal aplicada y no meramente abstracta, que no busca sólo “al interior del Derecho” las respuestas, sino en las “conexiones e interacciones del Derecho con la Sociedad”. Precisamente sólo con una referencia a la sociedad de la época es posible determinar si la decisión se compagina con las expectativas normativas recogidas en las normas, y si el Derecho penal está cumpliendo su función de reafirmación de la vigencia de dichas expectativas. Las reglas de la prueba, la imputación objetiva y subjetiva, constituyen algunos buenos ejemplos de cómo se viene desarrollando la idea que la abstracción que supone el quehacer dogmático viene a ser enriquecida por una dogmática penal que resuelve los problemas activamente en una hetero-comunicación dentro del sistema social en su conjunto".
