Book International Health and Aid Policies

Download or read book International Health and Aid Policies written by Jean-Pierre Unger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International health and aid policies of the past two decades have had a major impact on the delivery of care in low and middle-income countries. This book argues that these policies have often failed to achieve their main aims, and have in fact contributed to restricted access to family medicine and hospital care. Presenting detailed evidence, and illustrated by case studies, this book describes how international health policies to date have largely resulted in expensive health care for the rich, and disjointed and ineffective services for the poor. As a result, large segments of the population world-wide continue to suffer from unnecessary casualties, pain and impoverishment. International Health and Aid Policies arms health professionals, researchers and policy makers with strategies that will enable them to bridge the gaps between public health, medicine and health policy in order to support robust, comprehensive and accessible health care systems in any political environment.

Book Moving Beyond the Crisis Reclaiming and Reaffirming our Common Administrative Space

Download or read book Moving Beyond the Crisis Reclaiming and Reaffirming our Common Administrative Space written by Demetrios Argyriades and published by Primento. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the financial meltdown and the economic crisis in their fifth year already no one can any longer be in doubt about their exceptional gravity, their truly global impact and their profound effects hurting vulnerable groups and the very poor especially. As the world looks for an exit from this economic crisis – the worst in eight decades – the focus of attention is naturally on the causes, the factors that account for its wide reach and severity, as well as on strategies that might bring it to a closure. The quest for exit strategies is at the very centre of the issues and concerns explored in the present volume, produced by the IIAS. Like the preceding volumes, but even more emphatically, this volume, representing a collective endeavour of scholars and practitioners from many parts of the globe, finds cause to lay the blame, for our difficult predicament, on the institutional deficit, the policies, the practices and values that have followed in the trail of a highly misleading and erroneous model of governance. The «Market Model of Governance» as it is known, sought to reform, the structures and culture of administration and government in private sector ways. While instrumental values like efficiency and effectiveness were raised and praised profusely, those of democratic governance were discounted by comparison. In particular, integrity, the rule of law and due process, equity, legality and public service professionalism suffered a steep decline, in several parts of the world. Likewise, the invasion and the capture of public space, inevitably led to an unprecedented surge of greed, abuse and corruption that contributed directly to the crisis which is upon us. Looking for exit strategies, as its title aptly suggests, the present volume offers a rich menu of ideas drawn from the current experience of all the world ́s main regions. Not surprisingly, two concepts stand out throughout the book as necessary correctives, as well as pressing remedies to the world ́s ongoing malaise. They call for the recapture of our common administrative space and the reaffirmation of the values and virtues appropriate for democratic governance. To the IIAS, none perhaps are more important than public service professionalism and none other can contribute more effectively to the reform and consolidation of sound institutions for national, sub national, global and regional governance. For these reasons, at this juncture, the new volume like the others should be featured in every public library and become a vademecum of all scholars and practitioners of public administration and politics around the world.

Book The United States and Mexico

Download or read book The United States and Mexico written by Jorge I. Domínguez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By sharing one of the longest land borders in the world, the United States and Mexico will always have a special relationship. In the early twenty-first century, they are as important to one another as ever before with a vital trade partnership and often-tense migration positions. The ideal introduction to U.S.-Mexican relations, this book moves from conflicts all through the nineteenth century up to contemporary democratic elections in Mexico. Domínguez and Fernández de Castro deftly trace the path of the relationship between these North American neighbors from bloody conflicts to (wary) partnership. By covering immigration, drug trafficking, NAFTA, democracy, environmental problems, and economic instability, the second edition of The United States and Mexico provides a thorough look back and an informed vision of the future.

Book Reactions to the Market

Download or read book Reactions to the Market written by Laura J. Enríquez and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is manifest in developing countries around the world that the “shock” therapy administered to their economies by the neoliberal model of structural adjustment has failed, leaving much social and economic destruction in its wake. In Latin America this failure has led to a resurgence of interest in alternative models, some of them deploying various versions of socialism, as in Bolivia, Chile, and Venezuela, which has given rise to talk about the new “pink tide” enveloping the region. In this comparative study of four economies that have been making a transition to the market from their orthodox socialist pasts, Laura Enríquez focuses our attention on the plight of the small farmer in particular and on the importance of this sector for the overall socioeconomic success of the transition. Through this comparison, we see the similarities between Nicaragua and Russia in their rapid retreat from socialism and their adoption of reforms that have placed small agriculture, especially that focused on food crops, at a distinct disadvantage relative to export-oriented production. By contrast, Cuba has been more like China in adopting aspects of market reform while emphasizing small-scale cooperative and private farming in an effort to achieve food self-sufficiency. Drawing insights from Karl Polanyi’s study of the social and economic effects of the expansion of market relations in the nineteenth century, Enríquez highlights the role of the state in each of these countries in driving change in a certain direction: toward de-emphasis of small-scale farming and the eventual assumed demise of the peasantry in Nicaragua and Russia, which has led to countermovements of peasants struggling to survive, and toward the reconfirmation of the value of small farming in contributing to balanced economic development in Cuba and China.

Book Developments and Approaches in Science Diplomacy Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Developments and Approaches in Science Diplomacy Latin America and the Caribbean written by Echeverría-King, Luisa Fernanda and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-08-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various challenges prevent many emerging economies, including those within Latin America, from exploring the full potential of science, technology, and innovation. One major issue is the global need for a comprehensive understanding of science diplomacy and its role in bridging gaps in these crucial areas. Existing research often overlooks these regions' specific contexts and challenges, leading to a knowledge chasm. Developments and Approaches in Science Diplomacy: Latin America and the Caribbean addresses this lack of knowledge head-on, offering a detailed exploration of science diplomacy in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its implications for development. By focusing on real-world cases and practical insights, this book provides a roadmap for policymakers, diplomats, and researchers to harness the power of science diplomacy for sustainable development. Whether you're a researcher looking to deepen your understanding of science diplomacy or a policymaker seeking actionable strategies, this book offers a valuable resource. It highlights the importance of international engagement and collaboration in achieving development objectives, particularly in the context of the scientific diaspora and emerging economies. Through this lens, the book offers innovative solutions and strategies applied in Latin America and other regions facing similar challenges.
